Secret War in Shanghai: An Untold Story of Espionage, Intrigue, and Treason in World War II, by Bernard Wasserstein

Shanghai during World War II was a killing field of brutal competition, ideological struggle, and murderous political intrigue. China's largest and most cosmopolitan city, the intelligence capital of the Far East, was a magnet for a corrupt and bizarrely colorful group of men and women drawn to the "Paris of the East" for its seductive promise of high living and easy money. Political and sexual loyalties were for sale to the highest bidder. Allied and Axis agents, criminal gangs, and paramilitary units under various flags waged secret, savage warfare. Espionage, lurid vice, subversion, and crime came together in a lethal concoction. Nowhere on earth was the twilight zone between politics and criminality better exemplified than in this glittering and dangerous place. Secret War in Shanghai is the first book-length account of the little-known story of Shanghai in the war years. The widely respected historian Bernard Wasserstein has researched it entirely from original sources and uncovered startling new evidence of collaboration and treason by American, British, and Australian nationals. This remarkable depiction of complicity and betrayal is history at its most exciting and surprising.

Amazon.com Review
Before World War II, Shanghai was China's leading commercial center and the most vital and glamorous of Asia's great cities. Against the background of civil war, Shanghai was administered by a consortium of international powers intent on exploiting a defenseless China. The city's seizure by the Imperial Japanese Army in December 1941 ended much of its glitter but not its role as a den of espionage, corruption, and vice. Bernard Wasserstein deftly sets the complex scene as the different powerbrokers, from ambassadors to gangsters, accommodated to the occupying Japanese. The cast of characters is bizarre, ranging from master spies such as Richard Sorge, whose coup was to warn Stalin of Germany's impending invasion, to imposters and petty secret agents living on their wits. People were not what they seemed: the author reveals the often sordid realities behind his protagonists' masks as they struggled for survival and each others' secrets. Richly researched from original sources, Secret War in Shanghai is particularly successful in painting vivid pictures of the different national groups that found themselves caught up in the city's vortex: destitute White Russians, refugees from Hitler's Germany, British taipans trying to hang onto their business interests. The story moves as fast as a racy novel, yet it is all meticulously documented fact. --John Stevenson

From Publishers Weekly
On the eve of WWII, Shanghai contained two foreign enclaves, a French Concession and an International Settlement, each ruled by a small minority of foreigners for their own economic advantage. These enclaves, which sheltered a melange of entrepreneurs and rogues, adventurers and self-promoters, are the setting for Wasserstein's account of the war years in Shanghai, a city rife with violence, vice, colonial hauteur and espionage. Wasserstein's ability to ferret out long-forgotten information from obscure archives shows on every page of this close examination of the behavior of Shanghai's foreign community under the pressure of the Japanese occupation. There are no persons or events of high importance, no battles of consequence, no intelligence breakthroughs. Paradoxically, it is exactly this absence of momentous historical drama that gives the book its charm. This is a study in microcosm of local conditions in Shanghai, where a rag-tag collection of professional survivors adapted to shifting circumstances as the war progressed, and where the intelligence services of many nations labored with equal energy and futility. Wasserstein recounts the careers of many of the more colorful and, in some instances, sinister of Shanghai's spies and opportunists. If the canvas is a bit too crowded, it should still appeal to those who find irresistible the lifestyles of the eccentric, the raffish and the villainous. (Sept.)

From Library Journal
Wasserstein, president of the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies, is the author of five previous books. His new title is concerned with the espionage activities of the major powers in Shanghai during the late 1930s through the 1940s, when Shanghai was known as the intelligence capital of the Far East. Every one of the major powers operated intelligence offices there, often employing convicts or criminals as operatives in the most dubious of circumstances. It wasn't unusual for an operative to be working both sides of the fence while at the same running his own criminal enterprise to boost his profit margin. Wasserstein tells a fascinating story of wartime espionage that has had surprisingly little coverage until now. Relying on foreign intelligence documents and communications among the various agents, he weaves a tale of intrigue and suspicion that will surely interest readers. Truth is seamier than fiction.
By S. R. Schwankert
Bernard Wasserstein's look at the cloak-and-dagger side Shanghai in the 1930s and during World War II casts an even seamier light on pre-Liberation city than is usually seen.
Secret War exceeds the reader's expectations in several ways. First, the level of spying that was carried out by the various powers in the International Settlement against each other and their own citizens is nothing short of shocking. Sexual habits, personal histories, and suspected involvements were all part of the records kept by the Shanghai Municipal Police, a largely Anglo-Saxon coalition empowered to keep order in the Settlement.
Not a single nation is spared in Secret War. Just when the reader believes that Wasserstein may be favoring the British, he slams them for incompetence or outright treachery. The French, Germans, Americans, and Japanese all come under fire for treating their concessions in Shanghai as their own little fiefdoms.
Wasserstein introduces us to an eclectic cast of charlatans, murderers, and thieves. There's Eugene Pick, the Russian-born gangster who collaborates with the Japanese and, when not spending his evenings at the theater, is conspiring to have his rivals bumped off. There's "Count" du Berrier, a bogus aristocrat and genuine arms dealer available to the highest bidder. "Princess" Sumaire, another false member of a royal family, this social-climbing Indian imposter lived the high life and traded sex for influence, first among Western expatriates, and later, the Japanese.
After the outbreak of the Pacific War in the late 1930s, intelligence gathering in Shanghai turned from a broad activity aimed at foiling communism and social disruption to top-level spying. As the war deepened, two surprising details emerge: not only were citizens of the Allied nations prone to passively or actively collaborating with the Japanese, but both the Allies and the Axis powers spent as much time and resources spying on each other as they did on the enemy. Because Britain wanted to avoid dragging Japan into the larger conflict, instructions given to British citizens were never exact in stating what constituted collaboration, and therefore Shanghai continued, in some ways, to do business as usual even after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, when war was officially declared.
In between its various stories of intrigue, Secret War presents an account of expatriate life in Shanghai seldom documented elsewhere. The description of Shanghai's various newspapers and radio stations operated by the Settlement's nations and entrepreneurs is by itself short but fascinating.
Missing from this fine work of research is a single map of old Shanghai that would show the reader the lay of the land and the location of the various concessions. Without it, the reader has no idea which concessions abutted one another nor the proximity of one to the other, or the relation of the Chinese city to the International Settlement. The only other outstanding fault of the book is Wasserstein's propensity to use French and German phrases without offering a translation, even in the book's copious notations. Only those fluent in both languages will not be forced to seek the assistance of a dictionary.
Overall, Secret War in Shanghai is a great cold-weather read, a narrative that reads like a novel but with a story that is all too true.

A strugle for power by any means necessary.
By Kenneth S. Smith
If you are a scholar, serious student, or avid reader of World War II History, this book is for you. This book is exhaustively researched, meticulously crafted, and written with flowing style.
Prior to World War II, Shanghai was a major trading hub in Asia. The city was populated by Americans, British, Japanese, Italians, Nationalist and Communist Chinese, French, Australians, Indians, Germans, Jewish Refugees, Russian Refugees, and other minor national players. Add to the population rogues, spies, soldiers-of-fortune, adventurers, Chinese gangsters, con men, thieves, murders, and low lives of other callings. Mix all of these elements together and start a major world war and the intrigues begin.
This is a tale of treason, collaboration, bravery, propaganda, and maneuvering for power, prestige, and money. Businesses wanted to continue operation and ignore the consequences. Torture, murder, extortion, imprisonment, and blackmail were tools of the day. Numerous intelligence organizations competed against each other and all had to rely heavily on the Chinese for information. One fact I found interesting was the Japanese distrust of the Germans because they were racists. I find this ironic. Another interesting fact was the Allies used 100,000 Japanese soldiers in and around Shanghai at the end of the war to keep order. The book is filled with excerpts from intelligence reports, newspaper articles, and the eventual demise of some of the more colorful characters. There is also a section of fascinating pictures.
After the war, Shanghai made an attempt to recover some of her previous glory, but much of her business moved on to Hong Kong and Singapore. The final blow was the defeat of the Nationalist forces by the Communists in 1949. The city has never been the same since.

All that's Missing is Rick's
By Grey Wolffe
After the Japanese destroyed a Chinese Nationalist Army in the Battle for Shanghai in 1937, they began to take over the rest of the city. Shanghai in 1937, still had a French Concession (FC) and an International Settlement (IS, which was run by the British). The IS was just like “Casablanca” was in the eponymous movie. It was full of stateless people (White Russians and Jews mainly), spies and criminals. It was the perfect place to keep an eye on the Japanese from.

The FC was loyal to the Vichy Government, but there was a Gaullist underground that made trouble. The Germans were more Nazi than Germany, the Italians were neutral as were the Americans. The Chinese (who were only there as guests) supported the Nationalists, the Communists and the Chinese puppet government (controlled by the Japanese). The Japanese who were building the East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere treated all other Asians like ‘little brothers’ (and we know how that works).

The Japanese slowly closed in and around the FC and IS until they slowly took them over and put most of the Europeans/Americans in internment camps. But the spy networks and underground criminal black market thrived. This is the story of the underground workings of the spy networks. Well researched and documented.

Principles of Traditional Archery, by Thomas Grissom

A completely new way of thinking about traditional archery takes shape in the pages of this book. The emphasis throughout is on the basic principles that govern the design, performance, and use of all forms of traditional bows and arrows. Here are discussed both the practical as well as the technical considerations behind the choices faced by every archer in selecting and using the tools of the sport. The design of the bow--and the arrow--are analyzed in terms of the underlying principles that determine their performance and use. The concept of an ideal bow and an ideal arrow are introduced as useful ways of thinking about the limitations of real bows and arrows. The important parameters of the bow are identified and a straightforward way of measuring them is described. The effect of draw weight on performance is examined with a view to injecting some realism into the perennial question of how much draw weight is enough. A separate chapter is devoted to the problem of distance shooting and another to clearing up the confusion surrounding the topic of arrow penetration. The effects of variations in arrow straightness, spine, and weight are analyzed to answer the question of when better arrows finally become good enough. The techniques of shooting and an in-depth discussion of the causes, and cures, of target panic are presented. And finally a separate chapter is devoted to a primer on the analytical design of bow limbs. This is a book for all serious archers--and bowyers alike--whether their interest is bow hunting, field and target archery, or bow design, and whether they are newcomers to the sport or experienced archers. The chapters on shooting are among the best ever written and alone make the book invaluable. There is something here to enhance the understanding and practice of archery for all who love and shoot traditional bows and arrows.

A Physicist Discusses The Principles of Archery
By A Reader
Dr. Thomas Grissom’s book Principles of Traditional Archery is a unique resource containing valuable technical information that is relevant for a wide readership, including competitive target archers, bow hunters, bowyers, and even backyard archery enthusiasts. Grissom began shooting at the age of eight; his lifelong interest in archery, coupled with his PhD in Physics, make him particularly well qualified to author a book on the physical principles of archery. It should be emphasized, as the title indicates, that the book is directed toward traditional archers, not users of compound bows or crossbows.

As Grissom clearly states in the Prologue, his book is not a comprehensive manual on traditional archery. New archers looking for such basic information as setting nocking points or reducing bow noise through brace adjustment have a number of alternatives to turn to (Anthony Camera’s book is a particularly popular choice). Grissom’s book is better suited to those who have already gained some experience with archery, and who now wish to enhance their experience by learning about the “basic (physical) principles that underlie the design, performance and use of all forms of traditional bows and arrows,” (p. 11). Grissom is careful to avoid overwhelming the reader with mathematical physics, but enough technical details (without proofs or derivations) are provided to achieve the primary thesis of the book: “The way to understand traditional archery today is by examining the basic principles that govern the function of the bow and the arrow and by understanding that function relates to the design of each and the materials out of which they are constructed,” (p.32).

Grissom is quick to acknowledge the seminal contributions of P. E. Klopsteg, C. N. Hickman, and F. Nagler, pioneering researchers in the physics of archery during the first half of the twentieth century. In particular, Grissom repeatedly emphasizes the central importance of Klopsteg’s concept of the “effective mass” of a bow. As a shot concludes, the limbs and string continue to move (and other, more subtle internal energy losses also occur), reflecting the fact that a portion of the energy stored in the drawn bow is unavailable for propelling the arrow. Klopsteg’s notion of effective mass provides a useful way of quantifying and conceptualizing this lost or wasted energy. On page 63, Grissom states that “This is the most important fact to understand about the operation of a bow.” It takes a considerable investment of time and thought to fully understand that remark and its consequences as one studies subsequent chapters, but the effort is well worth it.

The technical analyses that Dr. Grissom provides will enable the reader to far more intelligently address the typical questions that most archers eventually confront: (1) What draw weight is optimal for my shooting purposes? (2) Does increasing bow weight necessarily result in a significant increase in arrow speed (while keeping arrows safely matched to the bow)? (3) Which is more important for hunters, the kinetic energy or the momentum imparted to an arrow? Why? (4) What are the realistic upper limits, given currently available technologies, for achievable arrow speeds with a bow that will also permit consistently accurate shooting? (5) What are the specific mechanical advantages of a recurve bow over a longbow? Are there any disadvantages?

As Grissom points out, many of the “accepted folklore” answers to questions such as these, while appealing to “common sense,” are in direct conflict with known laws of elementary Newtonian physics! Grissom dispels these myths, one by one, by providing the alternatives that physics suggests, along with explanations to help the reader understand how common sense may have led them astray. This line of development leads to some truly surprising results in places, even for readers with an extensive background in physics. (Fair disclosure; the author of this review is a mathematics professor who also teaches physics.)

Another point that Grissom emphasizes is the relatively small variance in the performance of all traditional bows. Even an inefficient bow of moderate draw weight will shoot a well-matched arrow at 150 feet per second; but the most efficient designs currently available rarely exceed 200 feet per second by significant amounts. Thus, all our investments into materials and designs that will increase arrow speed are devoted to achieving increases of 33% or less. This is a point that must be kept in mind for perspective as one weighs the value/ cost ratio of the many equipment improvements that are available. (This discussion obviously excludes crossbows, compound bows, and the hyper-specialized flight bows and arrows; Grissom claims to own a flight bow that has shot an arrow 860 yards, just short of half a mile! (p. 23))

In addition to his technical analyses of archery equipment, Grissom also provides helpful discussions of target panic, as well as what he calls “the cardinal sin” of the archer---becoming overbowed by an irrational and unnecessary desire for ever-higher draw weights. (I have seen this form of madness in one of my own friends, a relatively small man who now wrestles with a recently purchased 80 lb. bow like it is an anaconda.) Perhaps the stories about the legendary Howard Hill once shooting a 175 lb. bow (p. 35) have contributed to this particular malady?

I own a number of books on archery, but Grissom’s book belongs in a category of one in the collection. Only the early compilation of research by Hickman, Nagler and Klopsteg is comparable. Because of its uniqueness in treating the physical principles of archery from the point of view of Newtonian physics, Dr. Grissom’s book belongs on the shelf of any traditional archer who is interested in improving his or her experience through a better understanding of those governing principles. The book will appeal to those who wish to understand WHY they should follow certain practices, rather than accepting, unquestioningly, the recommendations of others. Dr. Grissom summarizes this perfectly on page 229, and I will give him the last word: “There is a lot of nonsense written about how to shoot a bow, some of it by people who shoot well enough but don’t really understand why.”

One of the best treatments of the subject I have seen
By Chris Loendorf
There is a lot of misinformation out there regarding the physics of bow and arrow technology, but this is one of the best treatments of the subject I have seen. Archery physics are explained without overwhelming the reader with complicated mathematics. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in traditional archery.

Add this one to your library of Traditional Archery
By Michael 45/70
This is a very detailed explanation of how the bow and arrow work separately and individually. There aren't that many books out there on the subject of traditional archery, and it's been my experience that each author has their own experience and interpretation of that experience. Plus, a number of books blend the different styles of bow shooting, and what works in a controlled environment doesn't work as well in the field.

I'm glad I came across this book and added to my library, because even though there are parts that fuel my math anxiety memories, other chapters are rather insightful. But again, if you're just getting into traditional archery (I'm into longbow rather than recurves and compounds) put your hands on as many books on how to shoot as you can and let them all fill in the blanks and build on each other. Unfortunately, I've not found one author who provides enough explanation to fully explain what you need to be doing to put the arrow in the middle of the target.

My only criticism for the book is that even though it's very detailed, a few pictures might have been helpful, especially when the topic of proper shooting form is discussed.

Global warming and the resulting climate change is one of the most serious environmental problems facing the world community. Global Warming: the Complete Briefing is the most comprehensive guide available to the subject. A world-renowned expert, Sir John Houghton explores the scientific basis of global warming and the likely impacts of climate change on human society, before addressing the action that could be taken by governments, by industry and by individuals to mitigate the effects. The first edition received excellent reviews, and this completely updated new edition (taking account of the latest IPCC Assessments, and now including questions at the end of chapters) will prove to be the best briefing the student or interested general reader could wish for.

Review
'It is difficult to imagine how Houghton's exposition of this complex body of information might be substantially improved upon ... Seldom has such a complex topic been presented with such remarkable simplicity, directness and crystalline clarity ... Houghton's complete briefing is without doubt the best briefing the concerned citizen could hope to find within the pages of a pocketable book.' John Perry, Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society

'I can recommend (this book) to anyone who wants to get a better perspective on the topic of global warming ... a very readable and comprehensive guide to the changes that are occuring now, and could occur in the future, as a result of human action ... brings the global warming debate right up to date ... Read Houghton's book if you really want to understand both the scientific and political issues involved.' William Harston, The Independent

'... precise account of the science, accompanied by figures, graphs, boxes on specific points, and summaries at the end of each chapter, with questions for students ... ranges beyond the science into the diplomacy, politics, economics and ethics of the problem, which together present a formidable challenge to human understanding and capacity for action.' Sir Crispin Tickell, The Times Higher Education Supplement

'I would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone concerned about global warming. It provides and excellent essentially non-technical guide on scientific and political aspects of the subject. It is an essential briefing for students and science teachers.' Tony Waters, The Observatory

'... an interesting account of the topic for the general reader.' Environmental Assessment

'... very thorough and presents a balanced, impartial picture.' Jonathan Shanklin, Journal of the British Astronomical Association

'For the non-technical reader, the best program guide to the political and scientific debate is John Houghton's book Global Warming: the Complete Briefing. With this book in hand you are ready to make sense of the debate and reach your own conclusions.' Alan Hecht , Climate Change

'This is a remarkable book ... It is a model of clear exposition and comprehensible writing ... Quite apart from its value as a background reader for science teachers and students, it would make a splendid basis for a college general course.' Andrew Bishop, Association for Science Education

'Global Warming remains the best single-volume guide to the science of climate change.' Greg Terrill, The Times Literary Supplement

'This very readable and informative book is valuable for anyone wanting a broad overview of what we know about climate change, its potential impacts on society and the natural world, and what could be done to mitigate or adapt to global warming. To this end, discussion questions are included at the end of each chapter. The paperback edition is an especially good value ... Houghton's compact book is an accessible, well-researched, and broadly based introduction to the immensely complicated global warming problem.' Dennis L. Hartmann, Department of Atmospheric Sciences, University of Washington, Seattle, USA

'I have no hesitation in endorsing this important book.' Wilfrid Bach, International Journal of Climatology

' ... a useful book for students and laymen to understand some of the complexities of the global warming issue. Questions and essay topics at the end of each chapter provide useful follow-up work and the range of material provided under one cover is impressive. At a student-friendly price, this is a book to buy for yourself and not rely on the library copy.' Allen Perry, Holocene

'In summary I would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone concerned about global warming. It provides an excellent non-technical guide on scientific and political aspects of the subject. It is an essential briefing for students and science teachers.' Tony Waters, Weather

'This book is one of the best I have encountered, that deal with climate change and some of its anthropogenic causes. Well written, well organised, richly illustrated and referenced, it should be required reading for anybody concerned with the fate of our planet.' Elmar R. Reiter, Meteorology and Atmospheric Physics

'Sir John Houghton is one of the few people who can legitimately use the phrase 'the complete briefing' as a subtitle for a book on global warming ... Sir John has done us all a great favour in presenting such a wealth of material so clearly and accessibly and in drawing attention to the ethical underpinnings of our interpretation of this area of environmental science.' Progress in Physical Geography

Fair, balanced, scientific, non-partisan, clear.
By J. V. Lewis
I have to take immediate issue with the [anonymous] reviews below that claim that this book doesn't address the difference between natural climate cycling and anthropogenic climate change: that difference, in a nutshell, is PRECISELY what this book deals with. Those reviewers never read it, or failed completely to follow its line of reasoning. This is NOT a partisan, political, ideological book. It is simply a guided tour of the science of climate change, revised in 2004. It carefully parses the current research. Read the table of contents [you can click on it at the top of the page] and see that the book is organized around the following inevitable questions: Is climate changing? How much is it changing? How much of that change is caused by people? What are the likely effects, short- and long-term, of these changes? What can we do about it? In the case of climate change, despite all of the political complications that have accrued to what was originally science, these questions are PRECISELY the ones a thinking person needs to ask. To have a book structured around them, referring, as it does, to the best [scientific, independently-refereed] research is a gift. It seems that almost everybody today picks their position on climate change as part of an ideological package-deal: most American conservatives almost automatically disdain the science because the Bush White House and Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter disdain it. Most American progressives almost automatically embrace the NOTION of climate change without actually knowing the science, because Al Gore, et al, have told them to. Both positions, taken in ignorance of the science, are ideolgical and symptomatic of the worst party-line politics. I urge you to read the science. It will take some effort, but that effort is our civic duty. This book has no agenda other than compiling the research and putting it before the reading public in an accessible format.

Informative and stimulating overview of global warming issue
By sinklerwl@aol.com
This is the first book I have read on global warming. Sir John Houghton has provided a carefully written account, with good explanations, fairly thorough referencing, and informative charts and figures. The subject of global warming is presented from a multifaceted perspective, with both informative factual material as well as elements of a personal perspective, introduced in a non-forceful but persuasive manner.
The book is aimed at those who know little about climatology or global warming. It will help to have some general scientific background. The pertinent facts - how much we have increased the atmosphere's CO2 concentration, in what way this gas effects the earth's energy balance, etc. - are available here, and the information is referenced to primary scientific sources. The prognosis for a warming of the atmosphere is gently asserted in the affirmative, but the uncertainties are also presented. Without being a climatologist, I found most of my qestions of this nature were answered. The only point I was curious about but found missing was what recent changes in glaciers tell us about the present tendency of global temperature.
After presenting the data, the models and arguing gently for a moderate warming tendency, Houghton presents several nice chapters on effects (potentially severe) and responses to the problem, with a particular emphasis on energy. The suggested responses leave one with the sense that Houghton is an optimist. He incites to action, where it is hard to imagine today's politicians asking us to change our habits so fundamentally.
This book is stimulating, both on the subject of global warming (whether or not it is occurring, how much, what is our role), as well as on the potential consequences and suitable responses. Considering that a response is advisable - a point of view which Houghton advances - one is left with a sense of the large scale of the responses which are necessary to reverse the accumulation of CO2: is mankind's ability to improvise its way out of a fix capable of dealing with a problem whose solution would require changes of this magnitude?

Essential Reading for Moving Past the Hype
By Sir Furboy
This is an essential book for anyone who wants to move past the media hype on this important subject. It covers the breadth of the science in an accessible manner, looking at mechanisms, measurements and the broad sweep of science informing the global warming debate. It is notable that the only people who profess dislike of this book are people who have not read it. No one can deny that the author has brought together a huge mass of information and presented it in an accessible manner which nevertheless dispenses with alarmism and lays any residual scepticism to bed.

Unusually for such a work, chapter 8 looks at why we should be concerned. Or rather, why we should care if - as is the case - there will be winners as well as losers from climate change. Houghton discusses his personal belief there, and successfully brings issues of religion and ethics into the debate - something which, as he points out, is all too often deliberately left out of the discussion.

Some people dislike such an approach in a book on science. Some will think that a breath of fresh air. Whether you agree with him or not, it is good to read a Christian writer explaining why Christians should not be siding with the climate change sceptics. Nevertheless if you don't want that in a book then just ignore that chapter - the book is still more than worth its price.

The best current research on Philo's allegorical exegesis of Scripture

The strong element of Greek philosophy in Philo's thought has been recognized since antiquity, but his relation to the Pythagorean-Platonic tenet of reincarnation has been a neglected, even avoided, topic in research. This book confirms the view common in the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries that Philo accepted the doctrine of reincarnation even though he preferred not to speak openly about it. The book shows how allegorization enabled Philo to give a reincarnational interpretation to very different scriptural passages.

Features:

  • Highlights the importance of reading Philonic parallel passages together for fuller understanding of Philo s message
  • Discusses the difference between protological and universal allegory in Philo's exegesis of the first chapters of Genesis
  • Introduces new concepts to Philonic research such as the corporealization of the mind (the result of transgression and a driving force for reincarnation) and monadization (the human soul's transformation into pure mind upon salvation)

Today, membranes and membrane processes are used as efficient tools for the separation of liquid mixtures or gases in the chemical and biomedical industry, in water desalination and wastewater purification. Despite the fact that various membrane processes, like reverse osmosis, are described in great detail in a number of books, processes involving ion-exchange membranes are only described in a fragmented way in scientific journals and patents; even though large industrial applications, like electrodialysis, have been around for over half a century. Therefore, this book is emphasizing on the most relevant aspects of ion-exchange membranes. This book provides a comprehensive overview of ion-exchange membrane separation processes covering the fundamentals as well as recent developments of the different products and processes and their applications. The audience for this book is heterogeneous, as it includes plant managers and process engineers as well as research scientists and graduate students. The separate chapters are based on different topics. The first chapter describes the relevant Electromembrane processes in a general overview. The second chapter explains thermodynamic and physicochemical fundamentals. The third chapter gives information about ion-exchange membrane preparation techniques, while the fourth and fifth chapter discusses the processes as unit operations giving examples for the design of specific plants.

Informative book (will not get into details)
By W. Ghost
This is an informative book, and a rather nice one. I didn't like the author's prose, but that really is a matter of taste.

Don't expect to learn anything deeply technical or to start doing Cog. Sci. research after reading this -- this book will actually show you where to go if you want to start working with Cog. Sci.

A stunning achievement

This is a tour de force. Five discipines are presented, both historically and currently, illuminating the current state of the cognitive sciences and how these disciplines got to their present levels of achievement.

Architecture in Britain, 1530-1830 (Pelican History of Art), by John Summerson

Revised to integrate recent research and new thought, Sir John Summerson charts the development of architectural theory and practice from Elizabeth I to George IV. Questions of style, technology and the social framework of architecture are resolved as separable but always essential components of the building world. Men of genius and buildings of fame emerge: Inigo Jones, Wren, Vanbrugh, Adam, Soane; Hampton Court, St Paul's Cathedral, London squares and the terraces and crescents of Bath. Appendices deal with Scottish architecture before the union and buildings in the 13 colonies of America. This book is a companion to Ellis Waterhouse's "Painting in Britain, 1530-1830" and Margaret Whinney's "Sculpture in Britain 1530-1830".
