Will Gorey's curious Victorian households scenes of disconcerting, dastardly deeds and "crypto-Edwardian" characters fade into obscurity with his death? Not a chance. Cultish popularity has yielded to international fascination with this fecund author-artist's carefully crosshatched drawings, quaint enchiridions and fey fiction. Curator/art critic Wilkin expands on The World of Edward Gorey (1996), which she coauthored, with this illustrated collection of 21 interviews that reveal Gorey's interests, foibles and habits. Gorey (1925-2001) studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, was drafted in 1943 (training in Utah, he began his writing career with "unpresentable... closet dramas") and majored in French at Harvard. He initially published his books through his own Fantod Press. More than 100 titles followed The Unstrung Harp (1953), and his readership expanded in 1972 with the first of the Amphigorey anthologies. Interviews culled from magazines (Cats, Dance, Vanity Fair), newspapers, NPR and TV (Dick Cavett) reveal Gorey's cultural influences and inspirations (cats, crime narratives, Louis Feuillade, Buster Keaton, the New York City Ballet, Ivy Compton-Burnett) along with minutiae and insights into his erudite, eccentric humor. Best of all, readers glimpse Gorey's creative processes: the texts almost always preceded the drawings, for instance. On his work he was characteristically irreverent: "I get a certain enjoyment out of doing it; but after it's done, I have no feeling for it at all." It's very possible that the only thing more peculiar and arresting than Edward Gorey's books and illustrations is Gorey himself. This collection of chronologically arranged interviews with Gorey (1925-99) spans three decades and shines light into many corners of his eccentric life and work. Gorey ponders his own bizarre dress (floor-length fur coats and sneakers), his obsession with the New York City Ballet, and his life with six cats and even manages to delve into some of the inspirations that fuel his enigmatic and strangely endearing work. This assembly by Wilkin (an art historian, independent curator, and critic, as well as coauthor of The World of Edward Gorey) reveals a charming, extremely intelligent, articulate, and eminently likable artist and writer. A thoughtful self-portrait thus emerges from the mist of questions and answers, one that helps to counter the paucity of recent Gorey scholarship. Gorey's own words clarify his peculiar and macabre worldview more succinctly than any biographer could hope to. Recommended for public and academic libraries.

This book sounds like a great idea

I am an Edward Gorey Fan. This book sounds like a great idea. It is a set of interviews from 1973 to 1999. And here lies both the strength and the weakness of this type of book. Each interviewer has his or her own line of questions for Gorey’s and each publication has its own focus on him (and it may have nothing to do with his art). Also an interview in 1973 cannot cover where his talents and interests may have lead by 1995. In the interviews we find Gorey’s obsession for the performances of the New York City Ballet, the authors he loves, the artists who may have influenced his work plus his life with cats. That is the strength of the book. Here is the weakness: many of the interviewers repeat the same questions. Gorey’s answers do not change and he provides the same story surrounding the subject. It does not take long before you feel like you could have taken the interview for him since you just learned the answers three times over. This is a collection of interviews and it works with that purpose in mind.
There are things in the book I did not know about Edward Gorey – he liked the television programs Dallas and Dr. Who. He was a precocious two year old and was known for his peculiar attire even in his Harvard days.

Irrisistible peculiarity

Wish I could give all my friends a copy for they would be charmed by Edward Gorey the person as he reveals himself in several interviews, and by Edward Gorey the artist as revealed by his drawings and several articles describing the man and his work. He is an original gifted with a fresh and open outlook on life. His comments can be honestly direct and disarming, yet there's always an element of the unexpected, the askew, and droll as though he had a special once-removed lens through which he viewed, considered, and depicted the world. He has created an absurdist world inhabited by unmistakably Goreyan-Edwardian characters in formal attire caught in silent poses with blank, deadpan looks unaware of impending catastrophe.
Absolutely love him and his work for I'm a sucker for asymmetrical lives, odd or macabre juxtapositions, and lyrical line....his line.

Too much repetition = boring

I ended up quite bored with the repetitive sameness of the information; meaning if Gorey was doing an interview he said xyz and in another interview he again said xyz etc etc. I did like maybe two of the included magazine articles on him.

Compact Comprehensive Usable Guide to Ergonomics

This is one of those books that captures the essentials, to a usable level of depth, for a particular subject- that leads to it becoming a "working book" rather than a "shelf book".
I've personally used this book and it's predecessor, to develop day training courses in ergonomics for industry & financial services sectors. Also, as reference for office, workplace & VDU "quick win" change projects.
The contents span: muscular work, nervous control of movements, improving work efficiency, body size, design of workstations, heavy work, handling loads, skilled work, human-machine systems, mental activity, fatigue, occupational stress, boredom, job design to avoid monotonous tasks, working hours and eating habits, night work and shift work, vision, ergonomic principles of lighting, noise and vibration, indoor climate, daylight, colours, and music for a pleasant work environment.
Key strengths are the attractive style & use of charts/illustrations, comprehensive supported content, solid biological/physiological science, and sheer usefulness of the material to make small or large improvments in the workplace. This is a very worthwhile purchase for any manager, consultant or student interested in enhancing productivity whilst taking a "human-centred" approach. Recommended highly.

This is a great audio course which teaches that there are two sides of money or creating wealth. The inner side and the outer side or the mindset and the practical habits. This course gives you both but focuses more on the mindset or inner side of money. Some may not like T Harv's over-the-top motivational style but I think he gives a good balance of both hype and straight-forward how-to advice. The course is a mix of in-studio audio recordings and live seminar audio recordings some of it seems to be in a weird order from bad editing and some parts repeat itself but keep listening its worth it.

Unless you get off on screaming motivational speakers...

Unless you get off on loud motivational rash speakers, this book isn't for you. This is not an audiobook, it is more like a podcast with poorly edited snippets added from a workshop Harv does. I ended up returning the book after listening half way through. My wife and I couldn't take anymore "AM I RIGHT OR AM I RIGHT!" along with the incessant "YES OR YES? SAY IT AGAIN TWICE AS LOUD YES OR YES!!!"

If you really want to read the book I would get an analog copy or better yet, read "I Will Teach You To Be Rich" by Ramit Sethi as well as "4 Hour Work Week" by Tim Ferris. MUCH better books and they won't scream at you.

Another fine fan-collectible from Dark Horse Books

This first chronicle details the history of the world up to about 40years prior to the opening of the Dark Portal. Having collected a number of the Warcraft art books released for the game expansions, I was pleased to find that the interior art of this particular book is largely handled by a singular, excellent artist named Peter C. Lee. Instead of the vignettes or concepts, it's usually a well composed scene which he is illustrating - honestly, this is the sort of high caliber art folks who collect the Middle Earth or A Song of Ice and Fire calendars would embrace. Lovely work on his part and not something we are usually treated to seeing. @165 pages, 25 paintings, 8 maps of pre- and post-Sundering of the known world, handful of drawings, quality hardbound with no slipcover.

Excellent

This book is amazing. The quality is top notch and I am very happy with my decision to pre-order it. The cover is well designed and feels like a great quality binding. The pages are glossy and have some weight to them, it really looks like they took great care to make something of value here. There is A TON of backstory for the Warcraft lore and several highly detailed pictures are sprinkled throughout the pages to offer some visuals. If you are interested in Warcraft's back story and lore then I highly recommend purchasing this!

Some initial thoughts. (Updated.)

From the moment I received the package I knew they knocked it out of the park with this one.
The book is weighty, but not overly so. The cover is thick with a very nice glossy sheen. The graphic of Medivh is a hi-res image, and I expect it to last the life of the book. Opening the book reveals the quality binding, and the care taken during the manufacturing process. Dark Horse really outdid themselves with this one.

ONTO THE LORE!
I am a huge Warcraft lore buff, so needless to say, I was excited to dive right into this book. I have just read the first 70 pages, and thumbed through the rest. This book covers the period of time from before the founding of Azeroth up until Medivh reaches adulthood. After having read the first few chapters, I can say the quality of writing is very good. It is written as a chronicle, (surprise, surprise) and gives a good overview of what exactly happened during the formative years of Azeroth. The illustrations are very good, and provide just the right mood to really enhance the reading experience.
I won't spoil anything, but I was really surprised to see that they gave reason to the Titans and their machinations, and more importantly, what drove Sargeras to madness. The book also gives a great explanation as to exactly how each school of magic is derived, and how they interact with each other, which was a great surprise.
I will update this review when I finish the book, and give my final thoughts, but at this point I can say I am beyond impressed with this first entry, and I can't wait to dive right back in. Good Job Blizzard and Dark Horse!

Update:
After finishing the book, I can safely say I very much enjoyed it. However, I do have some caveats.
Unfortunately, I have been spoiled by the fluff books from Warhammer 40k, which I hold as the gold standard for fleshing a universe out. I can't help but to compare the two. I wish the format had been more like the Warhammer books, it would have made it more enjoyable to read, and would have added more depth to the world. It feels like the writer(s) of Chronicle were either held on a very short leash as to what kind of stories they could tell, or they didn't have the imagination to flesh out more of the world. For example, (minor spoiler) the book says that Azshara spread her dominion over most of Kalimdor, but it mostly ends there. In Warhammer fluff, it would have given dates, locations, and parties involved, followed by a detailed description of the battles that took place, and the results. It might seem like a small thing, but it's those kinds of details I wanted from a book like this.
Keeping to that point, I want to add that on more than one occasion, the book glossed over new lore where it crucially should have been expounded upon, but instead favored already established lore. In my opinion, this really detracts from what I feel the book was designed to do- establish a clear picture as to what Azeroth was like prior to the invasion, where we are first exposed to the world.
On occasion, I felt as though the writing fell flat, as if the writer was given a topic to write about, along with stringent rules to adhere to, and so their creativity was hindered. For example. The Troll wars were a big part of pre- Dark Portal history, but I felt as though we only got a few pages, where it should have gone on for quite some time. Again, I'm comparing it to the Warhammer fluff, but I really do wish that the writer(s) were given creative license to flesh out the battles and heroes in the way that a Warhammer book is written.

I don't mean to sound so negative, but I just want this trilogy to be the new gold standard for books like this. That said, I originally rated the book 5 stars. I took one star off for my aforementioned caveats.

Pantone: the Twentieth Century in Color

I teach color theory in a major design school in California, and I have been eager to find a good source of decade by decade palette information for the 20th century. I am sad to say that this isn't that book. It is written from a fashion point of view, with grand sounding pronouncements about arbitrarily chosen artifacts. And, it is a Pantone book, so its primary purpose is to promote Pantone (A system invented in 1963, two thirds of the way through the 20th century), rather than provide insight into why certain hue combinations became popular. There is some visual entertainment to be found here, to be sure, but overall this is a lost opportunity.

A sort of dull grey

'The 20th century in color' seems an incredibly slim premise for a book and so it turns out. Really just a collection of color photos and graphics tipped into the pages. There seems to be no objective criteria for the choice of images, their significance or how they are used. Each spread has a large photo on the right-hand side yet so many of these are just not worth using big because of poor quality or blandness: page 163 has a soft focus PR shot of Don Johnson and Philip Thomas from Miami Vice; page 149 an equally soft focus John Travolta from Saturday Night Fever; a badly cropped and uncolorful shot Kurt Cobain is on page 175.

The authors have written some very generalized historical copy to go with the images and this text seems to rely on what pictorial material was available for each mini essay, so a series of pictures from the past are included even though they have no particular historical relevance. The authors, it seems, have written several equally light-weight books clustered around a Pantone theme.

The fact that I picked up a copy really cheaply suggests to me that the title has no substance or sales and was quickly dropped into the Close-out bin.

A sad disappointment

Like so many oversized books, this one is woefully over-produced. While dividing it into decades is a useful device, miniscule type for the text and skimpy pictures, both in quantity and size, made this a real disappointment for me. I never check out anything in a bookstore before I buy at Amazon, but if I had seen this, I would not have purchased it. There are two things I love above all else: colors and the English language. Both get short shrift here.

Kenneth S. Saladin is Professor of Biology at Georgia College & State University in Milledgeville, Georgia, where he has taught since 1977. Ken teaches human anatomy and physiology, introductory medical physiology, histology, animal behavior, and natural history of the Gal�pagos Islands. He has also previously taught introductory biology, general zoology, sociobiology, parasitology, and biomedical etymology. Ken is a member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society, American Association of Anatomists, American Physiological Society, Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology, and American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is the author of the best-selling textbooks Anatomy & Physiology: The Unity of Form and Function and Human Anatomy. Ken and his wife Diane have two adult children.

Please note this is a very helpful book. However many Professors use the Connect feature listed on the inside cover. Many School bookstores include this access in their prices. Please bear this in mind prior to your purchase here because Amazon does not provide this access in the cover price of the book and you must then purchase it online for an additional cost of around $57-$100 as of 1/17/12

The price of the book is outrageous! the previous edition has the exact same material and its only 40 bucks. Don't pay $200 dollars for a book with a few more pages and few more pictures. There is hardly any difference! BUY THE OLD EDITION!

On the whole I have found this to be an excellent book. The illustrations are fantastic, the text is clear and easy to read, and the font is relatively large (!). I have found some of the descriptions/explanations to be inadequate, but using the lab manual and the online resources have clarified all of the concepts that I had questions about. In addition to the numerous illustrations, the book also contains electron and photo micrographs as well as photos of cadaver dissections which give a far more realistic idea of what the anatomical features actually look like. The book also contains photos of things like tumors and skin diseases and includes "clinical applications." The chapters are arranged as follows:

Carus's new edition of the full score of Handel's Messiah, HWV 56, has been edited by famed conductor, keyboardist, and baroque -music scholar Ton Koopman, aided by Jan H. Siemons. If it were not for the presence of Koopman's name on this edition, one might be inclined to ignore yet another version of Messiah. That would, however, be a mistake. The present edition has a clear purpose and place in the number of Messiah scores currently on the market. Koopman and Siemons have prepared a reliable scholarly edition of the full score using Handel's autograph score and two copyists' scores as primary sources, along with six different secondary sources. Their critical report provides appropriate detail about the myriad movement versions produced by Handel for various performances of Messiah during his later career. Perhaps the most intriguing element in this edition is its foreword. In it Koopman touches briefly, but effectively, on a number of performance -practice issues that plague modern performances of Messiah. He gives informed opinions concerning appropriate performing forces, the use of keyboard instruments, ornamentation, and over-dotting. He reminds the reader that flexibility is the most important virtue in baroque performance, and that what is correct in one pleasure may not be in the next. Unlike most available editions of Messiah, Koopman and Siemons include all of the movement variations that can be reliably assigned to Handel within the main body of the score. Versions of the same movements are presented chronologically in succession, with preference given to the version found in Handel's autograph full score. Autograph versions of movements which Handel never performed are given in an appendix. This is in contrast to the more common practice of providing only the most performed versions within the score, and to relegate all "alternate" versions to an appendix; and interestingly, the vocal score prepared from this edition presents the movements in this very way. However, by presenting the movements chronologically in the full score the editors are allowing conductors to more easily reconstruct individual performances of Handel's Messiah as they would have been heard at specific times and places. This process is further assisted by a concordance, included be fore the foreword, that lists movement usage in Handel's own performances of the work between 1742 and 1754, with the most common version (that of London, 1745/1749) highlighted. --JAMES WINTLE Library of Congress, Quarterly Journal of the Music Library Association (U. I don't think it fair to write a detailed evaluation, since the only other edition that presents the whole of the Messiah complex of material and lets the user make the choice of what to perform is mine. For the English-speaking user, the presence of a German text beneath the English is a minor distraction, perhaps outweighed by the bolder and clearer music type. Fifteen years ago, I would have gone meticulously through the score, checking all the places where decisions were needed. But since I produced my edition, somehow Messiah has moved out of my life: I haven't even played it apart from 'I know that my redeemer liveth' at my mother's funeral. Provided that the rest of the material is equally well produced (and judging from the proofs of my new Cams edition of Israel in Egypt, I have no doubts on that score), these would seem to be a very desirable edition. A few points in the introduction invite comment. p. ix. Three weeks may seem a short time for Handel to have composed the work, but it wasn't exceptionally short for him (or, probably, many other composers). p. x. Playing the organ part in Saul recently, I tried to follow the instructions for when the organ played in octaves and when chords. It's not what a continue player expects to do, but it seemed to work. Koopman suggests that the claviorganum used for Saul could be played with the left hand on the organ manual and the right hand playing harpsichord, but 1 would have thought it more Likely that Handel wanted an organ so that he could vary the continue sound between movements. p. xi. Overdotting. I was more cautious than older editions in adding this and discussed the pros and cons of individual cases. Just because a composer can notate a passage precisely, it doesn't mean that he needs to: there is pressure on him to write quickly (remember the three weeks!) but also a desire not to encumber the performer with superfluous information. I don't agree with playing the instrumental upbeats of 'Sureley...' as writ, but in general I concur with Koopman's caution. Handel's trisyllable pronunciation su-re-ly and other linguistic peculiarities receive no comment, nor is anything said on other underlay problems. Jennens' contribution to the success of the work is ignored. One feature I don't like is the use of editorial small trills: unless both types are visible, it is difficult to tell the difference. --Early Music Review, May 2009

Harold Bloom is a Sterling Professor of the Humanities at Yale University and a former Charles Eliot Norton Professor at Harvard. His more than thirty books include The Best Poems of the English Language, The Art of Reading Poetry, and The Book of J. He is a MacArthur Prize Fellow, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the recipient of many awards and honorary degrees, including the Academy s Gold Medal for Belles Lettres and Criticism, the International Prize of Catalonia, and the Alfonso Reyes Prize of Mexico.
