About the Author
Author Blay Whitby is a Lecturer on Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Sussex, UK. He has taught AI for nearly two decades, and his research focuses on the social and ethical implications of new technology. He is the author of two books and numerous papers, and is editor of Britain's foremost AI journal, AISB, and a regular commentator on this subject for the media.

A short but honest introduction to AI

In the past year or so I have been doing some reading into artificial intelligence, mostly studying from textbooks (such as the Russel/Norvig and the Poole/Mackworth textbooks) as well as a few random papers. However, I decided to read this book concurrently since I wanted to get a broad overview of the field written in plain English (as opposed to the more formal notation used in AI).
This book has a number of strengths:
-First, it is concise - it presents an overview of the field without a lot of tangential or anecdotal discussion.
-Second, it aligns very nicely with what I have encountered in the technical texts, so I know that the author is writing from a position of genuine subject-matter expertise (instead of someone writing outside of their primary domain).
-Third, it is honest and doesn't include sensational material. While I'm not as much of an expert as the author, I have degrees in electrical engineering and computer science, and I become upset when I read books by credentialed experts who abuse their credentials to peddle science fiction under the guise of science. I think that it hurts the discussion when lay readers (including some pundits and policy makers) are misled by those who should know better. I commend the author for avoiding that approach.
I would have liked to have seen more time devoted to the more recent and upcoming research topics, but overall I think that this book delivers on what it promises.

A nice and clever aproach for begginers.

I've just read the Brazilian edition. I'm a lawyer expert on computer law and researcher on robot civil law. The book offers a clever analisys on several topics regarding A.I. The author presents an imparcial presentation of trends, reasearch in course and some times show his opinion. Every single topic is followed by indication on complementary read. Brazilian translation has some minor flaw, but is OK. On the final chapter the Author seams not to believe in a real inteligent machine coming soon. It's very clear Whitby is an expert on A.I. I do recommend it as a first aproach to A.I. It's a great book on a small pack.

Clear on many basics, unjust to critical perspectives

Since AI is so much a pop culture phenomenon by now, as well as such a broad field in science and technology, I wasn't sure just where a beginners guide might choose to begin. This little book draws from all three of those wells, with brief forays into philosophy, psychology, art, music and business as well. It assumes and requires almost no familiarity with AI. The author is clear in his descriptions of the vastly different( or perhaps not as different as they seem) areas of research and generally does a good job of presenting each of them with equal enthusiasm even when they themselves seem opposed. That said, I found much of the ideology propagated in this book deeply worrisome.
Throughout this book many ethical questions are raised about AI, but all are dismissed so quickly that no basis for judgement beyond one's preconceptions and the author's pushiness could possibly have been reached. Of any criticism, John Searle's Chinese Room Argument receives the most attention and dreadfully less than it deserves. That particular argument has a long conversation attached to it that would surely mire the book, but it should be made clear that the jury is very much still out on whether a digital AI could ever "understand" or achieve consciousness. If this or the equally brief discussion of consciousness interests you then I would highly recommend looking up one of Searle's Philosophy of Mind courses that are floating around for free on the web.
The author also seems to hold the view that the greatest success to be reached in AI is in creations with broad commercial appeal or application. Near the end of the book, and almost as an aside he mentions that by a great majority the largest source of AI funding is from the military. No surprise there, but surely the implications of this warrant more than a paragraph or two of discussion. In yet another extremely dubious comment, the author claims that, as in previous technological shifts, AI is likely to be very turbulent for the economy at first but will surely level out soon, as we highly adaptable humans rearrange our economic system to use the new tech to our best advantage. I just don't have the heart or the patience to express how naive I find this view, but if you'd like to read a very informative book by someone who does then try Martin Ford's book Lights In The Tunnel. In it, he explains many of the potential and actual perils that our globalized economies face from automation and new technology.
All of this monomaniacal jubilation is unfortunately quite endemic of AI proponents. It is very possible that having more of our needs met more easily and more completely by machines will not serve to make us better, smarter and more efficient people, but will instead make us fat, lazy, stupid and antisocial, preferring the company of our technologies to each other and often unable to tell the difference. At one point in the text the author says that all the best technologies are invisible, meaning that we don't even have to think about them or notice them when we use them. On that note, I'll leave you with a little Marshall McLuhan:
"The environmental is invincibly persuasive when ignored."
