............The planning and design of tailings impoundments has become a multidisciplinary enterprise that extends beyond the traditional application of geotechnical knowledge. This book is the first unified and systematic approach to the subject, bridging the various technical disciplines involved in the planning, design and reclamation of tailings dams. It describes the differences between tailings embankments and classical water retention dams from a geotechnical standpoint and outlines the application related fields to tailings dam design. Planning, Design and Analysis of Tailings Dams was written for geotechnical engineers, mining and metallurgical engineers, and regulatory personnel who have a fundamental knowledge of the principals of soil mechanics and water dam design. Steven G. Vick is a geotechnical engineer specializing in tailings disposal. Throughout his consulting career, Mr. Vick has explored the interface between theory and empiricism in tailings disposal. His research and technical publications formed the general outline for this book. After over 50 disposal projects, Mr. Vick is still intrigued by the complexity of the field. This book is a MUST in the engineering library.

When it comes to genes, life’s a lottery. As Abi would the first to know. She has spent her life in the shadow of her stunningly beautiful, glamorous older sister Cleo. So when Abi is invited to spend the summer in Cleo's large London home with her sister's perfect family, she can't bring herself to say no. Despite serious misgivings. Maybe Cleo is finally as keen as Abi to regain the closeness they shared in their youth? But Abi is in for a shock. Soon she is left caring for her two young, bored and very spoilt nieces and handsome, unhappy brother-in-law - while Cleo plainly has other things on her mind. As Abi moves into her sister's life, a cuckoo in the nest, she wrestles with uncomfortable feelings. Could having beauty, wealth and fame lead to more unhappiness than not having them? Who in the family really is the ugly sister?

Good but . . .
By Damaskcat
in the present tense so the book started off on the wrong foot with me and I think overall it was about one hundred and fifty pages too long. I am still considering whether the ending was convincing or not.

Abi and Cleo have not been close as sisters since their lives took very different paths when they were teenagers. Cleo was talent spotted by a model agency and her career launched as a top model. She has since married - Jonty - and had two children - Tara and Megan.

Now Cleo wants to get her career back on track. She invites Abi to stay with them for the summer. But has Cleo invited Abi because she wants to resurrect their relationship or because she sees her as a free babysitter now the nanny has walked out without giving notice?

Abi isn't sure about her motives but she finds herself getting on well with her two nieces and with their father - perhaps she is getting on too well with him. Abi gets herself a two day a week job in a bookshop to try and stop Cleo relying on her to take care of the children and to expand her social life.

I enjoyed the book up until about page one hundred and seventy five and then my interest flagged and reading the rest was something of a chore. Abi was too `good' and Cleo was too `bad' and Jonty was a bit too much of a cardboard cut out. I could never really form a proper picture of Richard, the book shop owner. I did enjoy the way Abi's growing relationship with her two nieces was portrayed and I thought that was well done. Unfortunately at times I wanted to shake Abi and tell her to sort herself out which rather diminished my enjoyment of the book.

If you are a fan of Jane Fallon then I am sure you will love this book but it I'm afraid I didn't enjoy it.

Mixed Feelings
By Yasmin
I have mixed feeling about this book. In one side of the coin I loved Jane's writing style, it is so down to earth and easy to get into, but on the other side, I thought that the rivarly between the sisters was pathethic.

First, we meet Abi, who is thirty- eight, a single mother,part-time librarian who is not into material possessions and considers herself to be not so pretty and lucky in life. Then we soon meet Cleo, who is Abi's older sister, who was a very successful supermodel, but is now married to a gorgeous man and mother of two daughters. According to Abi, Cleo is very selfidh, egocentric and only cares about social staus, material things and being on the front cover of magazines. Which is very true!

Then the rest of the book, just goes about how the Abi tries to restore the little relationship the two sisters had before Cleo's carrer started.

I have to say that I felt sorry for Abi! Couldn't she see that for most parts she was behaving like a teenager, trying to get her sister to like her? Trying to turn her sister into something she is not? HEY, I'm not on Cleo's side, because she was a total bitch! A careless mother and wife, who was only into herself, would do whatever she had to , to get what she wants. Then we meet Cleo's husband Jon, who is a wonderful father and husband, who is trying to make the best of his marriage for the sake of his daughters, but then something happens... I wonder if Abi, followed her heart if things would have turned out differently!

But what I'm trying to say is that, Abi should have not wasted her time, instead she should have lived her life! Just move on, instead of lingering in the past.

However, I did like the end because Abi, at last gets to see the true colous of her sister. It would be interesting if there was a sequel of the book, or if it even was turned into a movie. I think that I would want to watch it!

Where did we come from?

It's a simple question, but not so simple an answer to explain―especially to young children. Charles Darwin's theory of common descent no longer needs to be a scientific mystery to inquisitive young readers. Meet Grandmother Fish.

Told in an engaging call and response text where a child can wiggle like a fish or hoot like an ape and brought to life by vibrant artwork, Grandmother Fish takes children and adults through the history of life on our planet and explains how we are all connected.

The book also includes comprehensive backmatter, including:

- An elaborate illustration of the evolutionary tree of life
- Helpful science notes for parents
- How to explain natural selection to a child

From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2—This groundbreaking volume makes the complex theory of evolution accessible to young children. Using simple vocabulary in clear, direct sentences (for instance, "This is our Grandmother Fish. She lived a long, long, long, long, long time ago."), the author avoids concepts like specific prehistoric time periods—which are beyond a young child's comprehension—to create a truly inclusive work. The words and illustrations work beautifully together, showcasing the abilities of our ancestors and asking readers and listeners if they can do these same actions. Can readers, for example, wiggle or chomp like Grandmother Fish? Can they crawl and breathe in and out like Grandmother Reptile? The text and illustrations also invite further active participation, and this, too, makes the book understandable. Can readers find Grandmother Mammal among the illustrations of other relatives? Can they find Grandmother Ape? The book ends by noting that "Grandmother Human has many kinds of grandchildren" and reveals humans of different ages and races. Exemplary back matter includes a colorful, clearly labeled double-page diagram titled "Our Evolutionary Family Tree," which is excellent for close examination and discussion; examples of how to explain concepts of evolution to children; and suggestions for correcting common misunderstandings. There is a note addressed to parents, teachers, babysitters, and other readers, encouraging them to adapt the book and resources according to the needs of the child. VERDICT This selection can be revisited again and again as students refine their understanding of evolution. Highly recommended for homes, schools, and libraries.—Myra Zarnowski, City University of New York

Five stars for the book. Zero stars for the binding
By A. Williams
Five stars for the book. Seriously. This book puts evolution into a package that children can understand, and I think that the illustrations and charts are more complete than any I saw in middle and maybe high school.

That being said, my copy of the book arrived with all of the pages falling out of the binding--they had not made contact with any of the glue. Because this book is out of stock everywhere, I taped the pages in instead of sending it back. I hope this was an anomaly and not the norm.

As an ecologist searching for a good book to introduce my kiddos to evolution
By jlj
I'm not sure who loves this book more - me or my kids! As an ecologist searching for a good book to introduce my kiddos to evolution, I was fortunate enough to stumble across it in the early stages of its kickstarter campaign and am so excited about how it turned out. We just received our copy in the mail yesterday and my littles (ages 3 and 5) have had a blast following along with the actions and pointing out all the taxa they know as we trace through the family tree. Highly recommend it!

A Fabulous Book for the Wee Ones
By Randall D. Raymond
I bought this book as a gift for the Religious Education department at my Unitarian Universalist Church. It is an absolutely wonderful introduction to evolution (common descent in particular) for very young children. The illustrations are colorful and remarkably accurate for a very young kids book. Though it's obviously meant to be read aloud to a very young child, or group of children, but because it's illustrated so well, it can also be enjoyed by a pre-reader just paging through it. Probably the best feature of the book is the way it allows for the kids to physically participate in the reading in that it asks the kids to wiggle like a fish etc. Kids just love this sort of thing.

Professor Dowling has done a remarkable job in presenting his material. "Mechanical Behavior of Materials" is pedagogically solid, enabling comfortable self-study for engineering students or practicing engineers. The coverage of deformation, static failure, and fatigue failure analyses are comprehensive, and yet sufficiently detailed to be applied in practice. Individual chapters are devoted to each of the three major fatigue analysis techniques, i.e., stress, strain, and fracture mechanics methods. Each are clearly and thoroughly explained, along with their applications and limitations. Also covered are a host of standard testing procedures, material properties for all major classes, plasticity, creep, relaxation, and material damping (a rarity). Altogether, Professor Dowling's book stands out as an exceptional example of what an engineering text should be. It is a very fine successor to an earlier, and still worthwhile work called "Stress, Strain, and Strength" by the late Professor Robert Juvinall. Another useful book, is "Metal Fatigue in Engineering", by Fuchs and Stephens.

excellent resource for a practising engineer
By Anindya Bhattacharya
I am working as a practicing engineer and in the file of stress analyis of pressure vessels and piping. To properly understand the requirements of ASME Boiler and Pressure vessel code, particularly the 2007 edition of the code, where knowledge of stress and strain controlled fatigue as well as fracture mechnaics approach is necessary, there is no better book than professor Dowling's book. It covers things in a very simple , lucid style and in a self contained way, so that reader need not look for other references to brush up related things. The approach is physical rather than highly mathematical. The only thing I miss after reading this book is not having studied under the tutelege of Professor Dowling.

Outstanding Textbook
By Sam
This book is outstanding in its technical content and writing clarity. I actually had the pleasure to learn the material from Professor Dowling himself and his clear method of teaching is reflected in his writing. The book provides a solid theoretical and practical foundation on failure criteria, fracture mechanics and the mechanics of fatigue. In my case, I went on and studied several of the topics presented in the book in more detail but Professor Dowling's book is still my number one reference.
Professor Dowling has actually worked in the industry and the examples and exercises are real problems made with real data.
The only problem I have with the book is that I can't keep it on my shelf as my coworkers keep borrowing it.
Some might argue that the book price is high but this book is one of those you can't put a price tag on. If you really think of it economically, the book is a great investment (a no brainer).

From Library Journal
The New Urbanism is a movement that seeks to restore a civil realm to urban planning and a sense of place to our communities. It is a tangible response to the failed Modernist planning that has resulted in unchecked suburban sprawl, slavish dependence on the automobile, and the abandonment and decay of our cities. Katz, who heads a marketing and design firm, brings together in this informative and accessible book the voices and case studies of the young architects and planners who practice the New Urbanism--Peter Calthorpe, Andres Duany, and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, among them. They gear their designs to the scale of the pedestrian and seek to promote a symbiotic relationship between urban development and public transportation. An often published example of this movement is the community of Seaside, Florida. Extensively illustrated with plans, diagrams, and color photographs and renderings, this highly instructive book is a must for architecture and urban planning collections, and suitable for general readers.

. . .informative and accessible. . .the highly instructive book is a must for architecture and urban planning collections, and suitable for the general reader.''

From the Back Cover
"A growing movement to replace charmless suburban sprawl with civilized, familiar places that people love." So wrote Time Magazine in a recent article about Andres Duany, Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk and Peter Calthorpe, leaders of the dynamic urban design revolution coming to be known as the New Urbanism. Their breakthrough planning conceptspropose a vision of the future that combines the best of the past with the realities and modern conveniences of today.

Part of a broader trend toward the restoration of community and concern for a more sustainable environment, the New Urbanism addresses many of the crucial issues of our time: the decline of America's cities, the rebuilding of its crumbling infrastructure, housing affordability, crime and traffic congestion. Not without controversy, the proponents of this new design approach suggest bold alternatives to the present sprawl and isolation that they see as the consequence of five decadesof poorly planned suburban growth. Like the successful older neighborhoods and small towns where many of us grew up, the designs of the New Urbanism integrate housing, shops, workplaces, parks and civil facilities into close-knit communities that are both charming and functional. Walkability is key, but cars aren't excluded.

Public places lie at the heart of these designs which set aside their most valued sites for parks, schools, churches, meeting halls and other civic uses. Affordability is also an important consideration--a wide range from Seaside, the acclaimed new resort town in Florida's panhandle, to a revitalization plan for the deteriorating core ofdowntown Los Angeles. Also included is a mobile-home village in Arizona (cited by Progressive Architecture in its annual design awards), the rebuilding of the nation's largest "urban renewal" housing project in Texas and a "sustainable community" for 12,000 in British Columbia.

Initiated by developers, government agencies and/orcitizen advocacy groups, these pioneering new communities and infill projects offer simple yet compelling solutions to many frequently encountered planning problems. The extensively documented case studies in this book include photographs, drawings, diagrams and urban design codes--more than 500 images in all, a majority of which are in color. Essays by the movement's leading practitioners clearly articulate the principles of the New Urbanism. Commentaries by prominent architecture and urban planning theorists complete this comprehensive publication.

The New Urbanism advocates an ambitious yet pragmatic agenda for the building and rebuilding of our neighborhoods, towns and cities. This book provides an invaluable guide to this emerging movement forarchitects, urban planners, civic leaders and concerned citizens; it is also must reading for anyone who cares about the future of America's communities.

Milestone book quickly becoming coffee-table classic
By A Customer
In the first half of the 1990s, this book culminated the beginning of the most influential postwar stream of thought about American cities and city life, New Urbanism. It was intended to be the coffee-table conversation starter for suburban yups feeling just uncomfortable enough with their time-stressed lives to admit that, yes, their street is bleak, their house a cartoon, their strip-malled "planned community" a joke.
By starting the national conversation, the book has succeeded spectacularly, and continues to serve the purpose. With solid, workmanlike graphic design, it shows the way forward by depicting and decoding a handful of places both designed and built as successful alternatives to suburban sprawl.
Behind the scenes, the book became the flagpole around which a genuinely new intellectual movement rallied. At the time of publication, several of these projects were just on the drawing board. Today, only a few years later, over 150 such projects are blooming nationwide. New Urbanism today is the organizing question in the serious architecture and planning schools, in the development community, and in land-use "smart growth" politics. Developers are either running scared of it, or ripping it off, or putting big money into it. New Urbanism is a powerful set of ideas, and you can find them all here. This is the book that focused the disparate efforts of a score of highly talented, individualistic practitioners into a coherent beam. This is the book with the irrefutable visual argument in favor of building good places to live.
It is good, then, that the book's examples have been outrun. The book appears now almost quaint to those who, on the front lines of the land-use wars, have internalized New Urbanism's basic principles. The book is silent on, for example, the practical, tough, messy, political imperatives needed to reverse a half-century of mad sprawl. Reading "The New Urbanism", one would conclude that healthy places to live are bestowed as if by magic from the brow of one or another luminary planner. A second edition, incorporating successes and lessons learned, will be needed soon. The Playa Vista example in particular appears likely to vanish embarrassingly from the drawing board into the thin air where good ideas go.
However, the basic visual argument remains solid, almost timeless. I use the book constantly to introduce new allies to the cause and to silence critics. I recommend it to anybody interested in America's lousy excuses for cities, which are, after all, our civilization itself.

New Urbanism: This is how/where I want to live
By A Customer
The basic principles presented in this book are the stuff that dreams are made of. I have shared the ideas presented in this book with many of my friends and they all want to live in communities such as this. We've been strip-malled, mega-malled and automobilized to near-death. New Urbanism as presented here is like a million breaths of fresh air.
It is best to read the basic principles presented in the front of the book first. It may look like dry reading at first but as you get into it, your interest will be piqued at first, then grabbed, and you won't want to put it down till you've read it all. Having read this part you will be armed with the knowledge that, to date, no development or developer has had the guts to follow the principles completely. All of the projects presented include some elements of New Urbanism but none of them have it right. One of the other customer reviewers of this book, Ken Wing, missed this entirely. Hey Ken, there is no people in the Seaside pictures because they want the reader to see the architecture! Those who don't get it, or are afraid of change, tend to trivialze New Urbanism and mis-represent it.
Once you have read this book, you, like myself will want to immediately pack up and move to a New Urbanist community. Better ones are coming out of the ground each year and I hope to see one near me real soon.

I have only had the book a day and already it has given me great pleasure and joy. I love the fantastic pictures and diagrams. The computer digitalizations on a few existing towns today and what they could be like were truely fasinating. I couldn't help not liking the indepth descriptions of numourous cities, towns, and villages from around the country and canada as well. This book had colorful photos and diagrams, this book to me is pure genus!

Just fine as the lighter version of "The Other Side of Innovation"
By OnceMore
This book uses storytelling in the form of a fable to teach a limited number of lessons and / or principles about how to make innovation happen. While it is true that one of the biggest challenges involved in making innovation happen is realizing when to engage in such an undertaking and pull the trigger in the first place, this book is focused primarily on helping readers cope with various challenges arising from the "execution" portion of making innovation happen, and less so on processes and tasks occuring beforehand, such as how to generate ideas, evaluate them for innovativeness, feasibility, and other attributes, and then select one or more of them for implementation.

The lessons that the authors hope the readers of this book would remember revolve around what kind of help should be given to the point person tasked with planning and rolling out the new products and / or services, and how that person's performance should be evaluated. The authors also provide advice on team building and conflict resolution.

This book is a quick read, and is intended to be a lighter version of the authors' longer, more traditional, and more comprehensive book entitled: "The Other Side of Innovation: Solving the Execution Challenge." Both books have their own merits. Go for the more comprehensive book if you need or are interested in the details, but if you don't, this more accessible version should be just fine. I should point out, however, that the more comprehensive book is not that much more difficult to read than this one, so if you prefer to or can only own one of them, go for the more comprehensive book.

A simple tale that teaches big lessons
By Eric Isselbacher
This story offers incredibly valuable insights into what can help innovation succeed or cause it to fail. In an organization that already had a "performance engine" that is well established and operationally sound, introducing an innovation unit can be perceived as a threat to the integrity and efficiency of the performance engine, rather than be recognized a key to the organization's long-term success and survival. At first you may wonder why Chris Trimble and Vijay Govindarajan, two Tuck professors, chose to write a parable about farm animals rather than a traditional business school textbook to explain their ideas. But just as George Orwell so effectively used the characters and plot in Animal Farm to convey political and social commentary, so too do these authors use the animals on Windsor farm to dramatize just what it takes for innovation to succeed. By using a parable, the authors remove most of the extraneous detail that typically clouds corporate case studies, thereby making the basic principles plainly evident. In addition, the story is designed to prompt discussion among those who have read it to answer the question, "Who saved the farm, and how?" The book is well written, humorous, and easy to read, and undoubtedly each of the animal characters will bring to mind someone you know. This is a must-read for anyone planning on launching an innovation team or program.
