Something different

This short book is written in a somewhat unusual way. The cover is gorgeous, though I don't understand the bottom part. Exposition of all topics is very compact, but apparently complete and there is C++ code with almost every algorithm and data structure. Topic selection is also a bit unusual, for example I was hoping to see compact red-black tree code, but instead there is a one line mention of a study that found another tree data structure called treap superior to red-black tree along with detailed presentation of this data structure. I glanced at my copy of Knuth and saw that he plans to cover treap in his next edition, so maybe it is indeed a better choice.

Also for a 200-something page book it covers very many topics. There are chapters on Monte Carlo and external memory algorithms which I have not seen in other books. As such this book seems to be offering an original approach rather than create another copycat of Knuth/Cormen. There are no exercises or questions for readers in this book, but I am considering using it for the algorithm's class I will teach this fall.

There are specialized books for topics like machine learning and optimization, but this is the first book where I see clean C++ code for neural networks and the back-propagation math is somehow explained in one paragraph. Definitely a worthy addition to my computing book collection. Hopefully this one will force the Knuth/Cormen/Sedgewick/Weiss classics update their coverage.

Could have been an amazing algorithms book

This could have potentially been one of the best algorithmic books. It covers a wide variety of topics including some non standard (but non the less important) topics that are otherwise not covered in any other book. The bonus is that it contains well written modern c++ code. So why the 2 stars ? Because the author makes no attempts to explain the topics in fullness, or even partially.
It seems that the author wanted to get the explanations part out of the way so he can code some more.
The sentences are incomplete and instead the author uses mathematical notations. The Author assumes that the reader understands many subtleties in math and CS (which is for the most part incorrect) and skips those explanations as well. So, if you have the patience to figure out yourself what the code in this book does (based on the title of the chapter) then you'll enjoy it. Otherwise, like in my case this book will decorate the shelf.

Under Mao, the party established the power to approve or reject proposed marriages, to dictate where couples would live, and to determine if they would live together. By the 1960s and 1970s, romantic love had become a counterrevolutionary act punishable by “struggle sessions” or even imprisonment. The importance of Chinese sons, however, did not wane during Mao’s thirty-year regime. As such, in a world where nobody spoke of love, 99 percent of young women still married.

An objective observation of a love culture that tells the story of sacrifice, suppression, loneliness, and transformation

To be honest, before opening the 1st page of this book, I was expecting some degree of reasonable cultural misunderstandings or misinterpretations from a non-Chinese author. Surprisingly, I found myself unable to put the book down after flipping through the 1st few chapters. This book is highly addictive to anyone who is interested in the people in China and their love culture. I was captivated by the snippets of stories narrated by normal everyday Chinese people from all walks of life. The book linearly progresses from stories about the older Chinese generation all the way to young children who hold entirely different views compared to their elder counterparts. The author's observations and analysis were often times spot on. I was really impressed by the amount of research Melissa has done to write this book. At the same time, she is very honest in admitting her lack of understanding when it comes to certain bizarre viewpoints expressed by her interviewees. The book's main focus is the love culture in China, yet quite often, the author takes the necessary effort to educate her readers about the historical context and psychology that influenced such a cultural outcome. This includes delving into the darkest chapters of communist China's Mao era. Make no mistake, the author never attempts to inject any of her own subjective judgement as a foreigner. In a nutshell, this book was fun, enjoyable and it exceeded my expectations. It is an objective observation of a love culture that tells the story of sacrifice, suppression, loneliness, and transformation.

Couldn't put this book down! Beautiful collection of stories on love and marriage

I loved this book. In this unique blend of personal stories, interviews, historical and political context, and the author’s thoughtful observations, “The Ugly Wife is a Treasure at Home” gives the readers a rare, intimate, and privileged glimpse into the lives and hearts of Chinese men and women born in each decade since the establishment of Communist China. These storytellers bravely share their experiences of love, marriage, loss, longing, and so much more…Some of the stories are heart-warming, others heart-wrenching – either way, I got swept away and couldn’t put this book down. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in Chinese history and culture, stories of love and loss, and the dynamics of marriage and family and what makes it work.

fascinating stories illustrating three types of love in Chinese culture

The Ugly Wife is a Treasure at Home vividly portrays Chinese experiences of love and marriage. Schneider's retelling of these stories helped me understand some of the perspectives my Chinese friends have shared, while reminding me of my own experience in China. Particularly fascinating was the way that the stories illustrated the three types of love as understood by Chinese culture (family, friendship, and romance).

This book brings a personal and sympathetic perspective to a foreign and sometimes difficult-to-understand culture, and these thought-provoking stories made me rethink my own expectations for love. I recommend this book for anyone wanting to understand Chinese culture or simply wanting to gain a unique perspective on love, romance, family, and relationships.

Great Book!

I found Condrad LeBeau's book to be absolutely amazing! Immediately applying what I learned, I noticed my family and our dogs were calmer, we all seem to have deeper and complete sleep, nightly muscle cramps are gone, constipation gone. I can't wait to buy Mr. LeBeau's other book "Immune Restoration Handbook" 3rd. addition!

Conrad LeBeau delivers a very useful guide pertaining to the treatment of illness, packed with medical information, and home remedies. In the Introduction, the author discusses the bio-oxidative therapies of H2O2, low-cost therapies, and info on self-help found in the kitchen cupboard and refrigerator.

The author discusses taking a closer look at the function and benefits of: Honey; Aloe Vera; Molasses; Oregano; Lemons; and other common items for prevention and treatment of illness. In addition, several articles are reprinted in this book from the Journal of the AMA. Included in this book are diseases that were treated with 3% Hydrogen Peroxide: Pneumonia; Gastritis; Urethritis; Poison Ivy; Insect Bites; Sore Throat; Peridontal; And other diseases that were treated before 1904.

The author also highlights H2O2 as a truly wonder molecule, the history of H2O2, and how it was once used to treat topical wounds as a disinfectant. Case Reports are included, and the uses of H2O2 for pets, houseplants, and farms. The reader learns about the many uses of H2O2 And Aloe Vera Spray, how to make it, and what to treat it for. Some of the uses mentioned are: Colitis; Cancer; Fungus; Acid Reflux; lupus; Burns; And other illness. This book is concise, informative, and useful. Highly recommended.

Helpful Reference for Realistic Remedies

This is a small book that packs a lot of information. It is a collection of medical references along with brief anecdotes. It is not meant to be read straight through instead it is best to look in the index for the subject that is most interesting/helpful to you. Then read the section and maybe try to incorporate one of the home remedies.

One of the things I like about the author's advice is it is realistic. His remedies generally do not call for an extended process or a lot of steps. For the most part they are simple remedies with just a few ingredients.

I found it to be a great reference. There was a small paragraph about a lemon/olive oil drink that is good for detoxing the liver. It stated it worked well for those suffering with chronic fatigue. I tried it and it worked immediately. I have continued to make this drink on a regular basis and still receive benefits (increased energy/well being) every time. However, as always, your results may vary.

There are other things I will eventually try and see how well it works for me. Some things I did not find as effective, the aloe vera/hydrogen peroxide spray for pain did not seem to help much. But I will keep trying and tweaking things because different things can be helpful at different times. The great thing about home remedies is there are not as many side effects as some prescription medications. But again, your results may vary. By doing your own research, you should be able to find something that will work well for you.

About the Author

Sarah Pink is Professor in the School of Communication and Media and the Design Research Institute at RMIT University (Australia). She specialises in developing interdisciplinary research and scholarship rooted in social and visual anthropology. Her work usually involves digital visual methods and media, and often seeks to connect applied practice, methodological development and theoretical scholarship and she has authored, edited or co-edited 10 books. Her research projects and collaborations at Loughborough University (UK) focus on domestic energy consumption and digital media, and occupational safety and health in organisations.

Dylan Tutt is a Senior Research Fellow at the Innovative Construction Research Centre at the University of Reading. His publications reflect a strong interest in the social shaping of technology, workplace studies, ethnographic interventions, construction sociology and the sociology of the family.

Andrew Dainty is Professor of Construction Sociology and Associate Dean (Research) within the School of Civil and Building Engineering at�Loughborough University. He is co-author/editor of seven books and research monographs and is co-editor of the journal Construction Management and Economics.

Use the online study guide

Worst "textbook" ever.
I wish zero stars was an option. This is the worst textbook I have ever used. I can only assume "teachers" choose it because it comes packaged with quizzes and tests and lectures so they don't have to do any work. The online study guide includes an outline that is far superior than each chapter for pulling out relevant information. There is nothing pulled out or emphasized as important in the chapters. If you are looking for a term enjoy reading the unpleasantly formatted text looking for it. Key information is nowhere to be found. I have never seen a textbook like this and it is a chore to use. Bought it for an online college class and the textbook was useless for open book quizzes and tests. The online study guide that is free to use was very helpful for the outline, but the other study tools like flashcards, etc were also terrible. Each chapter has one flashcard. Weak.
I am only writing this review to discourage other teachers from choosing garbage like this for their classes. Hopefully people will see this and not buy the book, but just use the online study guide.

It takes the Old Testament and places this person in the context of the time with Eli and Samuel, but not how we normally hear about these people and the spiritual state of the Isrealites. He explains things so carefully in a spiritual way that God's abandoning the Tabernacle at Shiloh finally makes sense to me. The plague when the Isrealites looked into the Ark of the Testimony also makes sense. It is very well written by a godly man and is worth the effort to read. I just wish I had found it earlier and read it sooner than I have, since many questions I have had have been put in context and answered. His other books are well worth reading... at least the ones I've read so far, but I intend to read more of them. Unfortunately, they are readily available only in Kindle, but the Kindle versions are easily navigable in the format of the ones I've bought so far. It is hard to buy the book to give away in Kindle format, when the written copies are unavailable.
