Inquiry as Inquiry: A Logic of Scientific Discovery (Jaakko Hintikka Selected Papers), by Jaakko Hintikka

Is a genuine logic of scientific discovery possible? In the essays collected here, Hintikka not only defends an affirmative answer; he also outlines such a logic. It is the logic of questions and answers. Thus inquiry in the sense of knowledge-seeking becomes inquiry in the sense of interrogation. Using this new logic, Hintikka establishes a result that will undoubtedly be considered the fundamental theorem of all epistemology, viz., the virtual identity of optimal strategies of pure discovery with optimal deductive strategies. Questions to Nature, of course, must include observations and experiments. Hintikka shows, in fact, how the logic of experimental inquiry can be understood from the interrogative vantage point. Other important topics examined include induction (in a forgotten sense that has nevertheless played a role in science), explanation, the incommensurability of theories, theory-ladenness of observations, and identifiability.

Blushing bride Chrissy Hamilton was strong-willed, but nothing prepared her for her groom's infidelity. So she escaped to Dry Creek, where fresh air and sunshine would heal her heart, renew her faith and help her baby thrive. And when she met thoughtful rancher Reno Redfern, she devised a story to tell the folks back home.

When Reno heard the rumors that Chrissy had named him as the father of her child, he was floored—especially since they'd never dated. But, chivalrous instincts aroused, he decided to rescue this damsel in distress and complete her family. Though their relationship began in deceit, could Reno show Chrissy that his feelings for her were as true as his faith?

Wonderful little read
By A. Marsh
I first picked up the book because of the synopsis on the back - the story of a girl naming a perfectly innocent man as her baby's father and then the promise of it all being resolved in some faith-affirming way (it IS an inspired romance, after all) was just too trashy to be true. And it was. I guess the synopsis writer never read the book itself. Instead of the inane plot promised on the back, I found a new favorite author and book. Before reading the book, ignore the back - I spent half the book trying to figure out what was going on as I tried to resolve the synopsis with what I was reading. To summise the differences, Chrissy never named Reno as the father, she didn't initially want to return to Dry Creek, and Reno only went to go get her because she's "almost family," what with his sister being married to Chrissy's cousin. In all it's a delightful book with a wonderful cast of characters that are quirky and endearing and a slightly skewed romance-novel plot made all the better by Janet Tronstad's tongue-in-cheek style. I laughed to the point of tears in a few places, especially the ending involving bar-b-que forks and a tractor chase. Keep an eye on her name as she's proven in these little novels to be an extreamly gifted writer.

A Baby for Dry Creek
By Janet Tronstad

I loved this book by Janet Tronstad! A Baby for Dry Creek is about kindness, forgiveness, and trusting another person to love you for who you are. Chrissy Hamilton has a son out of wedlock. Since she grew up with a single parent, she knows the way people will act toward her and her son. The few times she had been to church, she heard how the people whispered about her and her mother. Reno Redfern had met Chrissy in the previous book, A Hero for Dry Creek. She ended up returning to Las Vegas and Reno figured that's where she belonged. Like his mother, she wouldn't be happy living in a small town without the big city lights.
However, when Chrissy gets into trouble, who is her rescuer? Reno Redfern decides maybe he can show her the finer points of living in a small town. He goes to get her and bring her back to Dry Creek. Chrissy is afraid she will get the cold shoulder from everyone once they find out she has a child. Can Reno prove to her he can love her for who she is? Will Chrissy accept the kindness from the community members of Dry Creek, or is she like Reno fears, more attuned to life in the big city? Before Chrissy can decide, she needs to learn how to trust again and to accept help from others. Sometimes we can't do it all on our own and need help from friends, family, and especially God. It doesn't make us weak; it makes us stronger. Make sure you pick up this great book by Janet Tronstad and check out her other books in this series!

Great read but some issues
By M. Palmer
The story itself was GREAT! We met Crissy in the previous book when she shows up in town with Reno to see her cousin Garrett. Dry Creek receives a letter from an attorney that names Reno as a possible father to Crissy's baby and the people of Dry Creek urge him to go to California and bring her home where she and the baby will be safe.

He does.

Crissy is a very, very, very independent person. She will NOT take a handout from ANYBODY! Her "I'll pay you" really got on my nerves. When Mrs, Gargrive offered to show Crissy the way, she said "I'll pay you."

This was such a GREAT book BUT the author has totally lost the timing of these stories. The book is clear that it is early spring.

Crissy came home at Thanksgiving to Dry Creek. I don't know how long she stayed, but that doesn't matter. The book says "7 1/2 months later" Here's how I see this:
Late November (Thanksgiving): Crissy comes to Dry Creek she may or may not have known she was pregnant at that time, but she had left her fiance by then.

February: Nikki is married. Apparently Crissy was still there at this point. She HAD to have known she was pregnant and was probably even beginning to show.

Early Spring (7 1/2 months later????): Word comes to Dry Creek that Crissy is now a mother.

Nope, doesn't add up to me. That's why this book only scored four stars.

Ideas of Slavery from Aristotle to Augustine (The W. B. Stanford Memorial Lectures), by Peter Garnsey

This study, unique of its kind, asks how slavery was viewed by the leading spokesmen of Greece and Rome. There was no movement for abolition in these societies, or a vigorous debate, such as occurred in antebellum America, but this does not imply that slavery was accepted without question. This book draws on a wide range of sources, pagan, Jewish and Christian, over ten centuries, to challenge the common assumption of passive acquiescence in slavery, and the associated view that, Aristotle apart, there was no systematic thought on slavery. The work contains both a typology of attitudes to slavery ranging from critiques to justifications, and paired case studies of leading theorists of slavery, Aristotle and the Stoics, Philo and Paul, Ambrose and Augustine.

Amazon.com Review
This book uses historical primary sources to attempt to explain how slavery was viewed in ancient Greece and Rome. This is no mean task, because the Greek and Roman public conversations generally steered clear of the subject. The result is a typology of classical attitudes towards slavery, ranging from critique to justification, and a careful look at the views of Aristotle, the Stoics, Philo Judaeus and Paul, and Ambrose and Augustine.

Review
'This is a very professional book on a topic of perennial concern ... Bright sixth-formers would benefit from exposure to this book, which shows how much can be gained by tackling ancient history and philosophy together.' JACT Review

'Garnsey gives a fascinating discussion of the history of ideas about slavery, varying from the positive to the doubtful but rarely to the outrightly abolitionist. He also provides the key texts (in translation only), making the book remarkably useful since it gives easy access to some of the patristic passages not otherwise readily available in English.' Journal of Theological Studies

'This book is a fascinating and fundamental statement on its subject ... The evident passion of the work and material referenced in the bibliography and the notes ensure that it is a must not just for students and teachers of ancient social, philosophical and church history, but also for anyone interested in the underpinnings of modern slavery too.' Great college philosophy text
By Beaver, Columbia SC
I use this as a required reading in my 100-level philosophy course. I love how it appeals to and gives excerpts from original sources (i.e. Aristotle, the stoics, Augustine, etc.) and then also breaks down and explains these original sources. While these readings are sometimes challenging for first-time philosophy students, with class discussion I think this is a great beginner source. The presentation of slavery from an ancient and historical perspective is so important if we really want to understand what has led to the perpetuation of slavery throughout history, and is important in the consideration of what continues to sustain modern slavery. I will be using this text again this fall for the third semester in a row, and I plan to continue using this text as long as I teach my current course on philosophical ideas of slavery.

Very well done
By Michael J. Sopher
This book is a revised and extended version of the W.B. Stamford Lectures given by Dr. Peter Garnsey at Trinity College Dublin in 1995. The author examines ancient Greece and Rome and categorizes his "ideas" of slavery into two large divisions: Attitudes to slavery, and Theories of slavery. The first part, dealing with "attitudes" to slavery, range from critique to justification of the subject. The second part examines the "theories" of Aristotle, the Stoics, Theologians Philo and Paul, Church Fathers Ambrose and Augustine, and others. The author draws his conclusion from these philosophers' own writings and therefore is commended on his excellent research.
The author finds that there was no major movement for abolition in these societies, unlike antebellum America, but one should not conclude that slavery was accepted all together. The problem with this analysis is that a majority of the Roman and Greek societies do not excuse or condemn the subjection of other human beings. In reality, any abolition to slavery was kept private or generally ignored.
Slavery is not an idea but rather a judgment that we are human beings and slaves are not. One can see that our own century has witnessed the terrible consequences of dehumanizing other human beings. An opportunity to compare ancient slavery to modern slavery is completely ignored by the author and for good reason, simply because it would have required an entire different section. In conclusion, the "why" is left for us to contemplate, yet one of Garnsey's achievements is that the thought behind or concerning this matter is so clearly revealed in this book.

Well worth the money if you have the advanced knowledge
By TammyJo Eckhart
If you are looking for an introduction to slavery in the ancient world, do not get this book. To fully understand and use this book, one must not only be knowledgeable of the ancient world but also have a pretty good grasp of the many authors Garnsey looks at. Instead of trying to make some grand generalization about slavery in the Greco-Roman world, this book tries to look at individuals and different "schools of thought" in the ancient world. The result is a nice journey through several ancient texts. However, Garnsey does have an agenda and an opinion: slavery is bad, and even ancients questioned it. The second is true, the first is debatable especially in the ancient world.

Night: A Novel, by Edna O'Brien

Edna O'Brien's classic novel NIGHT takes us through one long, sleepless night with Mary Hooligan. From the center of her bed, "a four poster no less," Mary recalls her fertile past, from her childhood in the Irish countryside to the love affairs she has confronted since leaving for English shores. Wistful, wanton, this erotic reverie shows O'Brien to be one of the foremost heirs to modernism. "Very few writers use language as richly and sensuously . . . There are passages here worthy of Joyce" (Library Journal).

Can love conquer loss? We act as though it can
By HT
"That night" is the night Rick, a teenage boy, came to get Sheryl, his girlfriend from her house after Sheryl's mother blocked them from seeing each other. A fight breaks out between the neighborhood men, protecting Sheryl because her father has died, and Rick's friends. "Until then, I had thought all violence was swift and surefooted, somehow sleek, even elegant. I was surprised to see how poor it really was, how laborious and hulking." [p 4]

The story is narrated by younger girl neighbor. She acts as both the young narrator of that night and also as a more omniscient third party narrator. The story unfolds like a series of comets in extreme elliptical orbit around the sun as the years pass. Each comet comes upon the sun with its own viewpoint and velocity, telling a part of the story before departing as another comet comes in. At first we see the fight itself, then what went into forming that night as well as what came later.

Through the events of the night and the ramifications McDermott explores the power and limits of love when confronted with loss and death. "'Listen', [Sheryl] said, 'If you knew everybody you loved was just going to end just disappearing, you'd probably say, Why bother, right? You'd probably even stop liking people if you knew it wasn't going to make any difference, they're just going to eventually disappear. Right?'" [p 71]
And yet, we can't help but love, knowing that love is powerless to save people. "She wants to love someone else. This emptiness left like an impression by the way she loved her father must be filled or else it will be as though he never lived." [p 176]

The novel explores love between girlfriend and boyfriend and well as parents and children. Love drives the desire to bring children into the world even though "the love that had formed them would not necessarily keep them alive." [p 164]

This is an excellent book weaving exquisite detailed descriptions of the everyday and the extraordinary. She makes something as mundane as a bowling alley come to life. "The bowling alley in our town was air-cooled: the decal on the door showed the letters capped with blue-and-white glaciers, dripping like mounds of ice cream. Inside, the cold air smelled of foot powder and warm socks. There was a row of pinball machines in the entryway, a cigarette machine, two mahogany-colored phone booths with seats like Ping-Pong paddles and doors that turned on both a light and a fan when they were pulled closed." [p 33]

And McDermott captures the everyday extraordinary beauty of a father and his young son. "Sheryl watched him as he gently lifted Roger from the floor. The child whimpered a little as he rose through the air, but then settled against his father's body as if it had been made for his rest, the shoulder carved to fit his cheek, the arm bent simply to cradle him." [p 135]

Alice McDermott deftly tackles the themes of love, loss, and death with exquisite prose and a beautiful story telling method of looping back again and again with more facts, more history, more future in each telling.

This novel is an example of why I love fiction so much; it holds the lives of others up as a mirror for us.

This is my fourth Alice McDermott book - what a rich vein of ore to mine.

I did not find this to be the best of Alice McDermott's works, but I did enjoy it........Rick and Sheryl are high school sweet hearts. Sheryl's father died suddenly, leaving an empty place in her heart. She fills that emptiness with Rick and when she tells her mother that she might be pregnant, her mother immediately sends her from their home in a Long Island suburb to an aunt's family in Ohio....Sheryl did not even have time to let Rick know and he is going crazy trying to find her until finally, one evening he and some pals armed with chains go to Sheryl's house causing a riot......The men of the neighborhood come to the aid of Sheryl's mother and the boys get arrested and everyone gets treated for minor injuries......In the meantime, Sheryl tried to reach Rick by phone, but never was able to talk to him.......Sheryl and Rick go on to live out their lives as their destiny dictates.......This story brings us back to our own teen years and first loves.
