A really good treatment of a complex history

This book does an excellent overview job on the "big picture" of the growth and development of Karate, including how it has spread in the United States. Some of the statements about other martial arts reflect some small bias on the part of the author, but that is minor and understandable. The book serves to answer most basic questions a reader might have, like "Who first taught this-or-that", or "Where was the first school?" and things like that. I don't mean to imply that this book is basic, or superficial. The history is complete and detailed, and covers a large time period. Any dojo owner or teacher out there needs to read this book to intelligently answer questions raised by students and lay people.

Martial Arts content and education has changed so much over the last, say, fifteen years that this book serves as the model for other studies that need to be made. The book is readable without sacrificing accuracy or clarity, complete, coherent (i.e., it keeps its focus consistently), and logically arranged. Anyone that wants to publish work that amplifies or follows up this work would do well to study its composition. Thank goodness this history was compiled when it was, before so much could be lost or forgotten.

A believable source for MA history

Martial Arts history is so intertwined with myth and legend, that its hard to separate true historical facts. This book does a good job of pointing out when parts of the traditional history are likely to be just fictional, yet also pays respect to a very eastern perspective; sometimes myth represents better the essence of the idea than a myriad of facts, which are by nature, disjoint and subjective.

Instead, she takes a shovel, which serves her in good stead throughout her life. She uses it to steady herself on the ship to a new place, to dig a garden, and to clear a snowy path to a moonlit frozen river, where she meets the young man she will marry. The staid text has no frills, mimicking Miss Bridie's plain life. As she uses her shovel to plant apple trees on her farm, bank the land during a flood, and, when she is old, bury her husband, children will see that Miss Birdie takes life as it is offered, with an equanimity that faces down adversity and holds close moments of joy. Not every child will be taken with a story that follows the life of a young woman as she grows old. Yet the care and crafting evident here must be admired. Caldecott award-winner Azarian's sturdy woodcuts are an excellent choice to illustrate daily life in mid-nineteenth-century America, and her pictures catch some of the emotions that the text shies away from: the small smile of contentment that comes from working on the farm; the sorrow when a fire burns down everything Miss Bridie has worked for. Part Of The Culture Wars

This book and Mr. Goldman's book about Elvis Presley both seem designed to depict these men as abusive, self-indulgent intellectual fly-weights whose contributions to popular culture are minimal at best. I think that many were outraged about this book because it shattered the John & Yoko myth. We all know the story about the first time they made love and the househusband bit in the last years of Mr. Lennon's life. Both were fabrications for public consumption,as this book and others makes very clear. Tony Bramwell's book Magical Mystery Tours indicates that the couple had split up at least once before they supposedly had ever been together. And Fred Seaman's excellent memoir, The Last Days Of John Lennon, details Ms. Ono's plan to divorce Mr. Lennon until she heard that he was at last planning on making another album and returning to the public spotlight. The voluminous and detailed information in this book is good, but the author's attitude is not.

Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth is the host and teacher for Revive Our Hearts, a daily radio program for women heard on 250 stations. Since 1979, she has served on the staff of Life Action Ministries in Niles, Michigan. She has authored or coauthored eighteen books, including Lies Women Believe and the Truth That Sets Them Free, A Place of Quiet Rest, and Seeking Him.

Susan Hunt is a mother, grandmother, pastor’s wife, author, and the former director of women’s ministries for the Presbyterian Church in America. Hunt has written a number of books, including Spiritual Mothering.

Mary A. Kassian is a distinguished professor of women's studies at the Southern Baptist Seminary, a popular speaker, and an award-winning author. She is the author of several books and Bible studies.

Carolyn Mahaney is a wife, mother, and homemaker. Having spent over thirty years as a pastor's wife, Carolyn has spoken to women in many churches and conferences. Helpful Introduction to Biblical Womanhood

What is a godly woman? In today's culture, many women--even Christian women--struggle with this question. Is she loud and fun-loving, or quiet and reserved? Is she out-there and bold, or does she always work behind the scenes? Is she exceptionally gifted and talented, or is she an ordinary citizen? Is she fit and good at sports, or is she girly and feminine? Is she out in the work force, or is she always at home? Is God's woman always found at one end of these extremes, or is there room for many different personalities and types of women in God's program?

These questions are confusing and even frustrating for women as they read their Bibles and try to reconcile what is there with what they see in modern culture all around them. What is worse is that even within the church, women often hear conflicting answers to their most basic questions. For many, who simply have a genuine desire to please God with their lives, answers seem elusive at best.

"Becoming God's True Woman," edited by Nancy Leigh DeMoss, offers a good starting place for women as they ponder the question of godly womanhood. Since the book has seven contributing authors, it reads almost like a magazine with each chapter being a succinct introduction to a relevant topic.

Part one is entitled The Glory of Womanhood as Created by God. Here, the authors lay a helpful foundation for the rest of the book with three chapters covering femininity, true beauty, and knowing God as Father. Here, the chapter on femininity, written by Carolyn Mahaney, is especially helpful as it offers a broad perspective on many of the roles and responsibilities to which women are called in life. While women are challenged in a counter-cultural way, many will be pleasantly surprised to hear that femininity does not equal being a wall-flower! Instead, there is room for many personalities and types of giftedness in God's kingdom. The key issue is a woman's attitude and willingness as she takes on her God-given roles in life.

Part two addresses The Challenge of Biblical Womanhood in a Fallen World. A particularly helpful chapter by Nancy Leigh DeMoss addresses the troubling issue of discretion. As believers living in a sex-saturated society, women desperately need to hear the call to modesty and good judgment as they interact with the men in their lives as well as society at large. I was slightly disappointed by another chapter in this section also contributed by DeMoss on a biblical portrait of a woman used by God. Although the chapter covered many helpful concepts, it stretched the biblical text a bit too far in drawing principles from the life of Mary, the mother of Jesus as showing the life of a woman used by God. This chapter could have been stronger if it were supported by additional texts and did not try to draw all its information from the life of one woman in the Bible.

Part three talks about The Freedom and Joy of Women as Helpers and Nurturers of Life. The chapters in this section cover many practical topics including the wife as helper, submission, raising feminine daughters, being nurturing mothers, and finally implementing a Titus 2 ministry in the church. In a time where many mothers and wives feel unimportant and underappreciated, these chapters serve as an encouragement and a challenge to women as they step up to these demanding roles. The chapter on Titus 2 ministry by Susan Hunt offers several practical suggestions for encouraging mentoring in the local church. While interested readers will want to seek further information, the chapter offers an excellent starting point.

A particular strength of this book throughout is the concentrated effort made by the authors to address women in all seasons of life. Married and single, younger and older women will benefit from this book. Many of the chapters offer direct advice to single women which is refreshing in a book that covers many issues directly relevant to marriage and motherhood.

Another helpful feature is an extended list of recommended resources at the end of the book. Because each chapter is short, many readers may find they will want to do additional reading on a topic of particular interest or challenge to them. The recommended resources are grouped by category and readers will find this feature very user-friendly.

The end of the book also features an extensive set of questions for "thinking it over and making it personal". This book could serve as a wonderful starting point for a group study on biblical womanhood and the well-written questions would be very helpful in that context as well as for individual use.

I would highly recommend this book for individuals or groups who would like an accessible introduction to the topic of godly womanhood. The book does not merely gloss over the issues, but it presents a variety of topics in a readable way that is not overwhelming. It opens the door for women to start talking and thinking through some of these issues, and will motivate many to do further study after they have completed this book.

This is an excellent book for any woman who wants to become all that God created her to be. The various authors address their topics from the authority of Scripture. If you truly want to know God's design and purpose for you as a woman, read this book. If you already embrace God's plan for womanhood, this book will encourage you as you fulfill your role, whatever it might be at this time.

They fight with Edson's Raiders on Bloody Ridge when it is attacked by an overwhelming Japanese force and go on the longest patrol behind enemy lines of the war with Carlson's Raiders. This is the story of how two men, one young enough to be the other's son, struggle to stay alive together in this vicious new war in the Pacific.

When one of them carves the first two notches on the grips of the 45 automatic given to him by his nine year old son to help him fight the Japanese, he is close to losing his life and very nearly his mind.

How does war without mercy change them? Will they both survive?

All but lost to history, Guadalcanal was the first combined land, sea and air victory of the war. Vicious, brutal and personal, it stopped the Japanese advance across the Pacific, changed the momentum of the war and gave hope to the people at home. Code named "Watchtower" it was Known as “Operation Shoestring” to those who were there. It lasted six brutal months during which the First Marine Division, sick, malnourished, shell shocked and battle fatigued, hung on by a thread through attack after attack from superior Japanese forces.

This is their story through the eyes of two fictional Marines who, with the rest of them, fought every day to stay alive.

Historical fiction with great history and very good fiction

This is an outstanding historical novel with the emphasis on the history more than the fiction. That said, the fictionalized part the book, centering on a middle-aged Marine cartographer and a 17-year-old sharpshooter, both from the same South Carolina town, doesn’t disappoint.

The history is even more captivating and evidences a huge amount of research on the part of the first time novelist. I have read a lot of WWII in the Pacific stuff, going back to Richard Tregaskis’s Guadalcanal Diary, probably the first war account that I ever read as a young teenager in the mid-1950s. From McClure’s book, I have learned a remarkable amount about this most important WWII land battle of 1942. I knew nothing about the naval Battle of Suva that happened as the first Marines were hitting the beaches of the Canal. Generals Vandergrist and Edson were merely names to me before reading of their crucial role during the entire Marine deployment of the battle.

There are a number of amazing set pieces in the book that I will long remember. One involves a flight of a plane carrying the protagonist to the Island in which, to escape marauding Zeros, the pilot took refuge in a huge thunderstorm. They escape but not without a near-death confrontation with the elements. Another involves a description of the aftermath of one of the early encounters of the Marines and a contingent of Japanese on an invasion beach. It is truly harrowing.

My one complaint about the Kindle version of the book is that it lacks maps. I would love to be able to see the locations of the multiple naval battles, the crucial airstrip, the “Slot,” etc. I understand that the hard copy will have those maps.

Word has it that there are more books coming from this fine author. I anxiously await their release.

Excellent read!

While I had trouble with the violence, I had to give it a 5-star rating because it was so well-written and beautifully researched. Mr. McClure's vocabulary is astounding and his writing style interesting and most informative. I could not put the book down until I was finished. I understood that the level of violence was necessary to the story because after all this was a horrific war, and no amount of sugar coating could change that. I personally have a hard time reading violence even when it's true, but this book was so good I had to keep going!

Hard to find; worth the effort

This book is hard to come by, but well worth all the searching if you are planning to take the DANTES principles of Public Speaking Exam for college credit. Jack Rudman's guides have been useful to me in taking (and passing) five different DANTES exams. For anyone who doesn't know, DANTES are like CLEP but originally started by the military. Official info can be found at getcollegecredit.com on the program.
This guides is comprehensive. It provides copies of all the official preparation materials provided by the Chauncey Group (who administers the test), along with many practice tests taken from old exams, examples of figures of speech and other important parts of public speaking, articles and excerpts from books and magazine about public speaking, as well as a glossary of public speaking basics. If you find yourself getting stuck on any of the practice tests in certain areas, look in the glossary to help review that subject. For this exam you will have to give a speech on tape on a topic chosen by the Chauncey Group. You must pass both the written and oral sections to earn credit.

Best Study Guide for the Public Speaking Dante Test

I highly reccomend this book to anyone who is wanting to take the Public Speaking Dante Exam. This book provided all teh informtion in order to blow away the test. I was really suprised that it was helpful as it was. I wish I would have found this book before my countless hours of searching book stores for a good stdy guide.

A poor excuse for a study guide

Unlike Comex's excellent CLEP study guides, the amateurish study guide for the DANTES Principles of Public Speaking test was hardly useful at all. Essentially, this "guide" is a bunch of practice tests spiral bound together. There's no rhyme or reason to the order of questions, no grouping by subjects, heavy repetition of questions, and it even changes fonts from test to test.

I could look over the sloppy presentation if there was some useful information inside, but unlike the CLEP guide, which gave an overview of the fundamentals of the subject, the DANTES guide has nothing but questions and answers. If you want to know why you got an answer right or wrong, you have to do your own research. If they had made that clear up front, I probably wouldn't have bothered buying this so-called guide.

The guide is probably useful in that you're bound to pick up some answers by sheer repetition, but if you buy it expecting to dominate the actual DANTES test or actually learn something, you're going to be sadly disappointed.

FOLLOW UP: I finally got my test results back, and I passed by a pretty decent margin. I suppose that means this guide is a success, but I still think it's pretty shabby.
