The illustrations are excellent and include several new scanning electron micrographs and clinical case photographs. The revision of chapter 12, on the neural crest, is especially valuable as it effectively consolidates the latest information regarding the complex role of this tissue in development. Grouping the integumentary, skeletal, and muscular systems together in chapter 9 may confuse readers, as these tissues primarily arise from different primordia. The extensive passages on molecular processes and signaling pathways may be daunting to readers lacking a foundation in molecular biology or genetics, and the book would benefit from placing these sections under separate subheadings. Everything you need and nothing you don't need!

This is a great supplemental review book for Human Embryology and Developmental Biology. It's a great book to have right next to your Embryology and Developmental Biology class notes. The illustrations and explanations are detailed and make this a fabulous addition to a first-year medical student's library. It a super supplement and can make the more dense textbooks of Human Embryology understandable. This book can also stand on its own as a refresher for those folks out of medical school and those in medical school that just need more understanding of the concepts. This book is priced well and can help the struggling student. I highly recommend it.

Human Embryology is in a class by itself.

As a craniofacial surgeon with a specialty in the developmental biology of the head and neck there is no better place to start than Carlson. I have followed this text over the years from its 2nd edition and it just gets better. Lucid explanations with up to date references. This is the perfect companion to Scott Gilbert's Developmental Biology. They should be read in sequence. Answers the questions on Indian slavery

To say slavery was an economic tool and that slaves worked to produce profits for their landowners is misleading in the author's mind. Slavery, Chatterjee argues, must be understood as a domestic institution. Further domestic slavery and the slaves who were part of it must be seen as having multiple connections to indigenous caste and community groupings. Slaves were not exclusively members of the lowest society of the Indian caste system, and the concept of "slavery" should not be limited to those belonging to such groups.
The book's main chapters focus on the explication of domestic slavery within the Murshidabad court and on that court's relations with the East India Company and colonial officials. After an initial historiographical discussion of slavery, Chatterjee moves on in her second chapter to a description of the slave system that operated within the Murshidabad court and the relationship of that system to ties of kinship and nonkinship. Her third chapter describes the efforts of East India Company and colonial officials to manipulate and reinterpret indigenous slave institutions in ways thought appropriate to British (and sometimes Islamic) laws regarding marriage and kinship. Chapter four studies the economic relationships and exchanges within the Nizamat, the role played by slaves in this process, and the interventions of company and colonial officials in these exchanges. Chapter five examines laws relating to slavery in this period, both company and Islamic, and the various legal contortions through which colonial officials managed their coexistence with a slavery that was said not to exist.
In the conclusion, Chatterjee places her subject in its modern context. We must understand personal law in modern India as the product of colonial intervention and construction. We must reconstruct the history of domestic slavery in India out of the nineteenth-century genealogical, kinship, and legal subterfuges that sought to obscure and occlude it from India's historical past. Finally, we must include the "sexual reproduction" of domestic slavery within our understanding of productive labor systems in India. Only when we have done all this "can the legacy of administrative complicity and family collusion in the persistence of a traffic in women and children in modern India be fully understood" (p. 239).

Poor writing hinder and otherwise okay book!

Not at all what I was expecting when I bought it. As other reviews have mentioned, it presents the material in a very unorganized and hard to follow manner. It is most certainly not for beginners and only someone who had previous experience would likely be able to understand what the author is trying to convey. There's some useful info in it but overall it's very hard to follow the author's writing structure.

Unforgettable Historical Fiction!

The Japanese Invasion of China in 1937 is a dark period in history. The Japanese committed many horrible crimes and atrocities on the Chinese population. Red Sorghum in very graphic graphic detail describes some of these atrocities and their impact on the Chinese civilian population.
But the book is much more than that. WWII does play a major role in the book, but the book is also a look into Chinese culture, family, and is such a moving window on China during this time period.
This is not an easy read. The translation is very good, but the book is very detailed and again at times very graphic. I do not like to bash books like the Good Earth or The Single Pebble as many people do. I agree that neither book was written by a Chinese person and I understand some of the criticism that orginates from that fact. I enjoyed both books and think they are valuable. HOwever, if you are from the school that demands a Chinese author and a Chinese voice to Chinese literature you must read Mo Yan. He is a gifted writer and he brings to life some very difficult times in Chinese History.
This is a very powerful book and parts of it will stay with you long after you have read the book. Again, this is not an easy book to read but well worth the effort.

brutal, real

I have never read such a brutal, graphic novel. It is truly rare for an author to capture the horror of evil so clearly or powerfully. Reading this book is like being beaten up.
At the same time, it is about life. Within the tragedy is a story about people facing and overcoming evil. Because it does not look away from the horror, the hope it implies is authentic. Thus this book distinguishes itself.
I recommend this book for a mature reader because of its powerful content. It will not leave you unchanged. You will shiver, and think.
It is an allegory for the communist takeover of China, and the film that this book inspired won the "Golden Bear" award. An old, leprous landlord represents the corruption of the Guomingdan period. But his murder enables a young woman to take over, and clean up the winery, representing China. The book shows peasants glorified, a new role for women, the breaking down of class barriers, and a brave struggle against Japanese invaders. All of this must have made it dear to Chinese communists!
Perhaps a few Western readers will imagine that all this makes it a less compelling book, however. I don't think so, and I suggest reading it yourself. At least see the movie, which follows the book fairly well.

I'm glad to have read "Red Sorghum"

All in all...I'm glad to have read "Red Sorghum"...but at times it seemed overly "obtuse"...with a great deal of "back and forthing" to and from previous and past 'times' 'events'.. A bit difficult to 'follow' at times.....
