The Four Obsessions of an Extraordinary Executive: A Leadership Fable, by Patrick Lencioni

In this stunning follow-up to his best-selling book, The Five Temptations of a CEO, Patrick Lencioni offers up another leadership fable that's every bit as compelling and illuminating as its predecessor. This time, Lencioni's focus is on a leader's crucial role in building a healthy organization--an often overlooked but essential element of business life that is the linchpin of sustained success. Readers are treated to a story of corporate intrigue as the frustrated head of one consulting firm faces a leadership challenge so great that it threatens to topple his company, his career, and everything he holds true about leadership itself. In the story's telling, Lencioni helps his readers understand the disarming simplicity and power of creating organizational health, and reveals four key disciplines that they can follow to achieve it.

Amazon.com Review
Allegories and parables have long been effective ways to impart serious bits of knowledge and wisdom without getting too pedantic, and business readers seem increasingly receptive to sensible management theory that employs this lively age-old literary technique. Obsessions of an Extraordinary Executive, a "leadership fable" by Patrick Lencioni, continues the trend with a solid prescription for organizational health--aiming for less politics, lower turnover, more productivity, and higher morale. Presented as a fictional tale of two technical consultants and their competing companies, the story is structured in a fashion that recalls his previous book (The Five Temptations of a CEO, whose main character and firm are even slipped into this narrative). Lencioni uses this hypothetical setting to show how his concepts might look and work in the real world. In this case, his "four disciplines at the heart of making any organization world class" are revealed and explained through the philosophy and behavior of Rich O'Connor of Telegraph Partners. Build and maintain a cohesive leadership team, create organizational clarity, communicate organizational clarity, and reinforce organizational clarity through human systems. Through his tale of Telegraph and its rival Greenwich Consulting, Lencioni illustrates how these principles can be beneficially employed--and how an organization can be stymied when they're missing. The story moves quickly and is followed by a comprehensive analytical summary, which includes self-assessment tools and suggestions for putting the ideas into practice. --Howard Rothman

From Booklist
This fictional tale by a screenwriter and head of a consulting firm that specializes in organizational development is billed not as a novel but as a "leadership fable." Just like Lencioni's earlier The Five Temptations of a CEO (1998), this new "fable" serves as a vehicle to illustrate the author's philosophy of management. The story is short and simple, but its lesson is large. Organizations must not only be smart; they must be healthy. For one thing, healthy companies can make themselves smarter, but unhealthy organizations squander intellectual advantage through infighting and cross-purposes. To drive home his moral, Lencioni follows his story with a discussion that explicitly sets down his four "actionable steps," or disciplines, that are the hallmark of a healthy organization--build a leadership team, create organizational clarity, communicate that clarity, and then reinforce it through human systems. Lencioni offers concrete examples of steps to take to establish these disciplines and suggests ways to assess whether they have been effective. David Rouse

"Moneymavericks92@Gmail.com" Fair Lessons, But Good If You Haven't Read Much Books On Running A Company
By Mr. K. James
This book is a fairly decent fable on running a business. Patrick builds up the story about two rival companies, but despite being rivals, one outperforms the other constantly. Patrick starts the story by describing each firm and the internal clockwork that keeps them running. He then goes on to describe the rival company that's constantly outperforming the other. which all boils down to 4 disciplines on a yellow sheet of paper, but we don't get to find out until the end of the story. And that's when it gets really good

The 4 disciplines turn out to be simple, yet powerful things. and if we as CEOs can incorporate this behaviour in our firms, then we would be winning too. Well once the other firm isn't doing this... also i must mention that Patrick has one of the best writing styles i have ever seen, i felt fairly relaxed as i relished the jolly welcoming font he used in this book, i liked how he broke up the paragraphs so that you felt as if you could take a breather to think about what he said for a few mins or more, and then get back into it. As opposed to other books that have a tendency to let their paragraphs lead onto 4 pages or more. I'll be the first to tell you i haven't read a million books as i've seen other do but I have read 70 books+ so i feel i'm fairly qualified to say such a thing.

Verdit:
If you're new to "how to run a corporation" type books, this will be really beneficial to you, on the other hand. if you're fairly learnt in this area, then it will probably serve as an enjoyable fable that you managed to pick up some decent tips from

Physical Quality:
This hard cover is strong, the title cover material is of respectable calibre

Good, Not Great
By Omar Luqmaan-harris
One of my favorite leadership books is Patrick Lencioni's The Five Dysfunctions of a Team because the parable format is highly suitable to demonstrating the concepts that prevent teams from becoming cohesive and the actions to increase cohesiveness really make a business impact. This book is a welcome addition to Lencioni's library on leadership and I took quite a bit away from it. I give it 4 stars only because the parable portion of the book wasn't nearly as compelling as that of the aforementioned TFDOAT. Very quick read and very actionable insights here. Check it out!

After Nature: A Politics for the Anthropocene, by Jedediah Purdy

Nature no longer exists apart from humanity. Henceforth, the world we will inhabit is the one we have made. Geologists have called this new planetary epoch the Anthropocene, the Age of Humans. The geological strata we are now creating record industrial emissions, industrial-scale crop pollens, and the disappearance of species driven to extinction. Climate change is planetary engineering without design. These facts of the Anthropocene are scientific, but its shape and meaning are questions for politics―a politics that does not yet exist. After Nature develops a politics for this post-natural world.

Jedediah Purdy begins with a history of how Americans have shaped their landscapes. He explores the competing traditions that still infuse environmental law and culture―a frontier vision of settlement and development, a wilderness-seeking Romanticism, a utilitarian attitude that tries to manage nature for human benefit, and a twentieth-century ecological view. These traditions are ways of seeing the world and humans’ place in it. They are also modes of lawmaking that inscribe ideal visions on the earth itself. Each has shaped landscapes that make its vision of nature real, from wilderness to farmland to suburbs―opening some new ways of living on the earth while foreclosing others.

The Anthropocene demands that we draw on all these legacies and go beyond them. With human and environmental fates now inseparable, environmental politics will become either more deeply democratic or more unequal and inhumane. Where nothing is pure, we must create ways to rally devotion to a damaged and ever-changing world.

Review
Dazzling… [Purdy’s] book is, among other things, a panoramic tour of what he calls the ‘American environmental imagination.’ …Purdy hopes that climate change might spur yet another change in how we think about the natural world, but he insists that such a shift will be inescapably political… For a relatively slim volume, this book distills an incredible amount of scholarship―about Americans’ changing attitudes toward the natural world, and about how those attitudes might change in the future. (Ross Andersen The Atlantic 2015-11-30)

For Purdy, one of the key challenges of the Anthropocene is to use the law in ways that adopt the best rather than the worst of each vision of nature: to integrate concern for human work and meaning into an ecological framework; to set standards for action on climate change; to make transparent the sources of our food and our treatment of animals…Purdy thinks we need to learn the core political lesson of his story―which at its heart is not about the politics of nature, but about democracy. This is a history in which democracy is constantly evaded, decision-making is removed from collective politics by appeals to ‘natural systems,’ and anti-politics creeps back in. (Katrina Forrester The Nation 2016-05-12)

Jedediah Purdy has written a big book, taking up a set of profound environmental questions and offering sweeping answers… The strengths of After Nature are significant and make this a must-read book for all who are struggling with how to reinvigorate environmental protection in the face of political breakdown in America and troubling global trends, including the emerging risk of climate change… The journey he maps is illuminating. In fact, perhaps the greatest strength of After Nature is its intellectual history of American environmentalism… With this book, Purdy shows himself to be a deep thinker on the nature of Nature… Purdy offers a provocative ecological vision and ethical argument that deserves to be reckoned with. He has established himself among the top tier of environmental philosophers of our day. (Daniel C. Esty Los Angeles Review of Books 2015-12-06)

After Nature argues that we will deserve the future only because it will be the one we made. We will live, or die, by our mistakes. (Christine Smallwood Harper’s 2015-09-01)

After Nature takes the reader on a smart and eloquent tour of the history of conservation movements, the rise of the study of ecology (and its flourishing in the wake of the Vietnam War) and the gradual expansion of environmental law, but Purdy is at his most insightful and persuasive when writing about the first of his ‘major realms,’ economy―and the subtle ways money has been shaping nature for centuries to suit its own needs… In the previous year, there’ve been many studies of the deeper meaning of the Anthropocene and the future of humanity, studies ranging from the impenetrable to the inconsolable. After Nature is by a wide margin the best of these books; in its passion, intelligence, and persistent thread of hope, it may very well be the Silent Spring of the 21st century. (Steve Donoghue Open Letters Monthly 2015-09-01)

Offers a powerful reckoning with our bewildering present… Its great value lies in its sophisticated, lucid study of the evolving American environmental imagination. Purdy…brings impressive intellectual and literary chops to bear on a history of American attitudes toward nature, and how those attitudes have manifested in tangible modifications of the air, land, and water… The book aims to show how our shared philosophical premises inform our laws, our behavior, and ultimately our world. (Rebecca Tuhus-Dubrow Los Angeles Review of Books 2015-11-30)

[Purdy] argues that our democracy is too beholden to the influence of money, that the processes we use to produce energy and food should be made more transparent to the public, and that technological solutions are unreliable and will not bring about the greater change of consciousness that is necessary to solve our most pressing problems. He urges an ethic of self-restraint and a new worldview in which human beings are no longer ‘the figure at its center.’ (Nathaniel Rich New York Review of Books 2015-10-22)

A profound vision of post-humanistic ethics. (Kirkus Reviews 2015-05-15)

It’s good to have as powerful a mind as Professor Purdy’s taking on these questions so central to our modern life. Every page has insights that will help people struggling to understand how we got here and where we’re headed. (Bill McKibben, author of The End of Nature)

The way forward
By K. Treynor
This book has caused me to reexamine not only politics, as the subtitle suggests, but also spirituality and how we enact our spiritual and ethical values in the world. This is the most important and thoughtful book I have read in a decade.

An urgent call for a democratic politics of self-restraint
By Sami in SF
Dr. Purdy has not only written an enlightening and lucid history of American environmental policy and imagination beginning with our colonial days, but also an urgent and thoughtful call to action in a natural world that is destined be controlled by human decisions - the Anthropocene. He asks us to re-invigorate a democratic politics that practices a self-restraint informed by post-humanist aesthetics and ethics. Our politics must derive from love and beauty, an ecocentric worldview that honors the mystery and uncanniness of other lifeforms while also honoring the unique position of humans as creatures of meaning, imagination, and creativity. 'After Nature' is highly recommended reading for anyone who strives to be the change s/he wishes to see in the world, providing a solid historical and intellectual foundation for doing so.

A good perspective on nature and humans and how they interact.
By John Martin
After Nature by Duke law professor Jedediah Purdy is a highly scholarly, intellectual account of the impact and behavior of humans on the natural world. Professor Purdy states that we are now in the “Anthropocene” (age of humans) epoch because nature no longer exists apart from humanity. Humans shape nature now more than ever thus they have to take responsibility for the environment. The book is an intellectual history of how Americans have shaped their landscape and ideas and practices around the world. Professor Purdy refers to it as “a political history of American ideas involving environmental imagination.” He states that there are four versions of this imagination:

1. Providential vision—nature has a purpose—to serve humanity.
2. Romantic vision—aesthetic and spiritual.
3. Utilitarian vision—nature is a storehouse of resources.
4. Ecological vision—the world is formed of complex and interconnected systems.

All four of these visions co-exist now and much of the book is devoted to a consideration of them. Professor Purdy also sees a three-fold crisis involving ecology, economics and politics. He says that markets produce increasing inequality and are blind to negative consequences, thus the only way to build a sustainable living space is through politics. He goes on to describe the contributions of various people to this issue, including John Locke, Alexis de Tocqueville, Henry David Thoreau, John Muir and many others. Now, he says there is a new appreciation of agriculture as organic and free-range means of growing food challenge industrial farming.

The final part of the book is devoted to the topic of climate change. The basic idea, he says, is that we have a standard of success that we strive to meet, for example to keep greenhouse gasses below 350 parts per million of carbon. But these standards are unrealistic and we must find a new approach. He proposes that democracy must be at the center of the Anthropocene epoch. Democracies need to practice self-restraint as we cannot depend on technology alone to solve this crisis. In the end people will change when they find two things: something to fear and something to love.

I would like to rate this book at 3.5 stars but have to choose. There are some very good ideas and useful information here and it is well researched and written as benefits a university professor, but the book is too academic and the idea that democracy is the best system for solving critical problems such as global warming is simply not right. Democracies often pander to the lowest common denominator and elect people who advocate simple solutions. An authoritarian leader with a real commitment to solving these problems could be more effective. Finally lay readers may get bored with the formal, largely academic writing style.

Review
“See You Next Tuesday is a showcase for Mai’s extensive abilities, and the most comprehensive evidence yet of her significance as one of contemporary cartooning’s most capable talents.” — Zainab Akhtar, Comics & Cola

“It's a good comic if you love shit and piss and can't handle your feelings. So that should be everyone who reads this website [VICE].” — Nick Gazin, VICE

“Whether being sweetly vulnerable, humorously self-involved, piercingly critical, or just flat out crudely hilarious, the Jane Mai of See You Next Tuesday is fun to hang out with.” — Rob Kirby, The Comics Journal

“Mai’s diary comics are a prism, fracturing and projecting myriad Jane Mais onto comics pages. All that we can tell about the real Jane Mai for sure, based on the resultant work, is that she’s really funny, and able to alchemically take some pretty distressing or depressing topics and turn them into funny comics.” — J. Caleb Mozzocco, ComicsAlliance

“I think fans of Kate Beaton and Noelle Stevenson (and probably Meredith Gran–my favorite webcomic is by her) would dig Jane Mai.” — Susie Rodarme, Book Riot

“See You Next Tuesdayis an often laugh-out-loud funny collection of comics, illustrations, and short text pieces that spotlights the cartoonist’s sharp timing, simple but expressive linework, and dark, occasionally crass sense of humor.” — Oliver Sava,A. V. Club

“What's great about [Mai’s] stories is that every issue, from sex to scat to culture, is simultaneously treated in a mocking but intellectually curious fashion.” — Rob Clough, High-Low

"Jane Mai is an artist specializing in food, eye patches, and bugs. Her work stands at the intersection of cute and disturbing." — Ivan Hernandez, Boing Boing

“Mai’s art is singular and original, yet carries echoes of Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara, with its dreamy contrast of darkness, surrealism, and childlike whimsy.” – Terell Paris, IndieReader

Praise for Sunday in the Park with Boys

"Sunday in the Park with Boys is about what depression feels like from the inside, although it never explicitly says so. Instead, Mai represents what David Foster Wallace called “the bad thing” as a centipede-like creature, growing and devouring, slithering and embracing her protagonist. It’s almost unbearable to read and yet the book’s minimalism and Mai’s smart sense of pacing (some pages have many panels, some only one or two) contributes to the effectiveness of her story." - Hillary Brown, Paste Magazine

"The first time I read the comic, I found it depressing; on rereading I began to see how the character comes to grips with what is going on in her mind to transcend it and that the story expresses a sort of universality of lonesome youth." - James Romberger has drawn graphic novels for Vertigo/DC

I was unfamiliar with Jane Mai's work, but read an intriguing review for this book on the AV Club. I couldn't put this book down. Mai's thoughtfully illustrated diary entries alternate between hilarious and touching. Really excellent autobio comics.

The research is both definitive and sobering: rich people who win the lottery stay rich. That's their normal state. Middle class people who win the lottery soon end up back in the middle class, because that's their normal state. And unfortunately, those who are broke and win the lottery quickly return to being broke - because, again, that's their normal state.

The amount of money you have (or don't have) is a mere reflection of who you are. If you think broke, you'll always come back to being broke. And if you think wealthy, you'll always return to wealth. Millionaires (and even billionaires) often go financially broke, but their wealth remains intact, and their finances always rebound.

No matter where you currently are in your life, you know you deserve and want more. The only way to get more is to do something differently. Get started today!

Finally, a Blueprint for Creating Massive Wealth!
By Dr. Matthew J. Loop
"The Million Dollar Mindset" is an incredible learning system from a true thought-leader in the field of wealth creation and personal development! As a celebrated wealth expert, James shares the proven methods that are guaranteed to turn a mindset of lack, limitation, and scarcity to one of prosperity, increase, and abundance. For these reasons alone, it's easy to see why Oprah invited him on her show, twice!

One of my favorite parts of "The Million Dollar Mindset" is contained within the 5th CD, which delves deeply into the psychological factors of influence. James uses the acronym C-R-A-L-S-S, which stands for consistency, reciprocity, authority, liking, social proof, and scarcity. Mastery of these factors combined with James' insight, is absolutely priceless and has sky-rocketed my income in the last few months! I've learned how to effectively leverage my time, efforts, and energy through other people.

I highly recommend this program to those that are serious about acquiring massive wealth. Since I've been so inspired by this course, I've been giving it as a special gift to friends, family, and fellow entrepreneurs. Reflecting on my phenomenal results from using James' system, the information included is worth thousands of dollars and James Ray International should charge what it's really worth!

If you want to cut through the chase study this program.
By Legacyman
Hello I have read many books in this area. This program really nails it. It really help you unleash your potential. This program works but it does so so fast you may be tempted to get so caught up in your success that you do not finish it. This book prepares you by opening up your mind from the conditioning of the Norm into the exceptional.

I use this to help my son learn since he was in the 3rd grade.

Beware of James Ray's Loose Translations of Spirituality
By Jean Brown
James Ray says: "The Latin root of the word "desire" loosely translates to de-sire, meaning 'of the father'. Your desire is your Higher Self wanting to manifest. It's your Higher Power wanting to work with and through you. God wants all of your goals and dreams to be humanly impossible. Do you know why? Because that way He is certain to be part of their achievement." - Million Dollar Mindset

A quick search will reveal that the word "desire" ACTUALLY comes right from the Latin verb "desidare" which is pretty straight forward. That verb comes from the phrase "de sidus/sideris" meaning "of the stars". The root here is sidus/sideris--star, constellation. The "sire" Ray is referring to actually comes from an old French word that forms the origins of "monsieur." That came from the Latin "senex," the declarative form of which is "senior." The sense of fatherhood wasn't attached to the word "sire" until the 13th century, long after Latin-speakers had anything to do with it.

This is just one example of Ray's penchant for loosely translating things. Generally, there's no harm in a loose translation. Sometimes, however, loose translations can be misleading, or can represent a manipulation of truth and sometimes these can be extremely dangerous. For example, James Ray's loose translation of a Native American sweat lodge ritual left three people dead in October 2009.

A Streetcar Named Desire (Heinemann Plays for 14-16+), by Tennessee Williams

The Heinemann Plays series offers contemporary drama and classic plays in classroom editions. Many have large casts and an equal mix of boy and girl parts. This play depicts the conflict between a fading Southern belle and the brash lower-class society of her sister's family.

From Publishers Weekly
Williams's classic play begins with Blanche DuBois's arrival in New Orleans to stay with her sister and brother-in-law, Stella and Stanley Kowalski. The determinedly genteel Blanche is shocked by their lower-class lifestyle—and by Stanley's frequently aggressive behavior. As Blanche's secrets catch up with her, a seedy reality trumps her love for romance. Rosemary Harris embodies Blanche with all the flare, attitude and Southern drawl commonly associated with the cultural icon. The role of Stanley is so physical that his presence is diminished by the lack of a visual performance, but James Farentino's Stanley is excellent. The overall production quality is excellent with musical segues and sound effects that enhance without distracting the listeners. This recording captures the cast of the 1973 Broadway revival (which won Harris a Drama Desk award and Farentino a Theatre World award). (Feb.)

Williams's Intense Desire
By Blaine Bisel
Tennessee Williams's masterfully written drama explores the extremes of fantasy versus reality, the Old South versus the New South, and primitive desire versus civilized restraint. Its meager 142 page spine is no indication of the complexity and significance that Williams achieves in his remarkable work. A strong aspect of the play is Williams's amazingly vivid portrayal of desperate and forsaken characters who symbolize and presumably resolve his battles between extremes. He created and immortal woman in the character of Blanche DuBois, the haggard and fragile southern beauty whose pathetic last grasp at happiness is cruelly destroyed. She represents fantasy for her many outrageous attempts to elude herself, and she likewise represents the Old South with only her manners and pretentions remaining after the foreclosure of her family's estate. The movie version of A Streetcar Named Desire shot Marlon Brando to fame as Stanley Kowalski, a sweat-shirted barbarian and crudely sensual brother-in-law who precipitated Blanche's tragedy. He symbolizes unrestrained desire with the recurring animal motif that follows him throughout the play. A third major character, Stella Kowalski, acts as mediator between her constantly conflicting husband and older sister. She magnifies the New South in her renounce of the Old pretentions by marrying a blue collar immigrant. Conflicts between these and other vividly colorful characters always in light of the cultural New Orleans backdrop provide a reader with a lasting impression and an awe for Williams's impeccable style and intense dialogue.

What happens when an irresistible force meets an immovable object?
By Jason Kirkfield
This is another classic from my high school days that seems wasted on youth. How can a fifteen-year-old in prep school appreciate the desperation and human frailty of Blanche DuBois? Or the dichotomy inherent in Stanley Kowalski's passionate brutality?

=================================================================================================================
BLANCHE: What you are talking about is brutal desire--just--Desire!--the name of that rattle-trap street-car that bangs through the Quarter, up one old narrow street and down another...
STELLA: Haven't you ever ridden on that street-car?
=================================================================================================================

Many will have seen either the stage or film versions of Streetcar, but reading through Tennessee Williams' Pulitzer Prize-winning play allows for the depression to really set in. Readers may even recognize qualities in friends and family members approximating those of alcoholism or domestic violence.

=================================================================================================================
BLANCHE: A hot bath and a long, cold drink always give me a brand new outlook on life!
=================================================================================================================

There are so many great dialogue exchanges here, outside of the classic "kindness of strangers" quote. I'll snip a few of my favorites.

=================================================================================================================
MITCH: You ought to lay off his liquor. He says you been lapping it up all summer like a wild-cat!
BLANCHE: What a fantastic statement! Fantastic of him to say it, fantastic of you to repeat it!
=================================================================================================================

The abusive domestic relationship seemed a common theme in mid-20th Century America; witness both Streetcar and The Honeymooners. "One of these days...POW! Right in the kisser! One of these days Alice, straight to the Moon!"

=================================================================================================================
STANLEY: When we first met, me and you, you thought I was common. How right you was, baby. I was common as dirt. You showed me the snapshot of the place with the columns. I pulled you down off them columns and how you loved it.
=================================================================================================================

Very easy to get through this in a sitting or two. Very hard not to be emotionally moved, even if the dnouement, vis-a-vis Stanley and Blanche, was not obvious to me after that first reading many years ago.

=================================================================================================================
BLANCHE: Don't you just love these long rainy afternoons in New Orleans when an hour isn't just an hour--but a little piece of eternity dropped into your hands--and who knows what to do with it?
=================================================================================================================

Postscript: My own copy is the mid-80s Signet printing, which includes a 4-page Introduction by the author.

Deception within the family
By DG
Deception seems to be one of the most salient themes. As Goleman writes, "We are piloted in part by an ingenious capacity to deceive ourselves, whereby we sink in obliviousness rather than face threatening facts."

Blanche buries her devious past with a new start in New Orleans and skirts questions with a swift wit in conversation. She waters down the pains and frustrations of the past with concealed drinking and shrouds her aging face from gentleman callers in a soft light. She delusionally and openly believes that a fictional Texas oil magnate will arrive to whisk her away from yet another prison she finds herself in.

Blanche maintains a very interesting relationship with Stanley, the bane of her existence in the French Quarter. While Stanley is ostensibly boorish and untamed, Blanche poorly masks these same latent characteristics in her own personality with a ladylike charm, frequent bathing, and heavy perfume. Her attacks on Stanley are actually projections, effectively assaults on the qualities she hates most about herself. Her outward disdain for her sister's husband is likely an aggressive reaction to what is better known as jealousy.

What's more, this behavior runs in the family (another universal Williams theme). Stella convinces herself that an abusive relationship is fit to raise a child in. And at one point, the sisters recall their mother's refusal to accept her own mortality and her imploration to her young daughters to participate in this shared collusion.

In the final scenes of the story, as Stella is giving birth to their son, Stanley finishes what he started, defeating Blanche completely in a territorial act of rape. When Blanche finally does choose to embrace honesty and come clean with Stella about the crime, her sister refuses to believe her and locks her away with the truth in an asylum, in step with what we'd expect from the DuBois family.

The play was originally to be named "The Poker Night," and like "The Glass Menagerie," this image is an appropriate symbol to help unify the piece. As Williams writes it, poker, a game of deception, is not just played by the men in this play.

Power: A Radical View, by Steven Lukes

This second edition of a seminal work includes the original text, first published 30 years ago, alongside two major new chapters. Power, Freedom and Reason assesses the main debates about how to conceptualize and study power, including the influential contributions of Michel Foucault. Power Revisited reconsiders Steven Lukes' own views in light of these debates and of criticisms of his original argument. With a new introduction and bibliographical essay, this book will consolidate its reputation as a classic work and a major reference point within social and political theory.

Review
"Three decades after the publication of his classic essay on power, Lukes has pulled off one of the rarest feats in social science. He has written a new and better edition of a classic. He does this by drawing from a major critical movement he had neglected (feminism), addressing the most influential alternative new explanations of power (Foucault and James Scott), and most importantly, incorporating recent seminal arguments (especially Amartya Sen and Martha Nussbaum)." - Alfred Stepan, Wallace Sayre Professor of Government, Columbia University

"Thirty years ago, Steven Lukes stirred up an intellectual firestorm with his radical analysis of power. Now he is doing it again. Thank heaven!" - Professor Michael Walzer, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton University

"Like the first edition, which it includes, this is a truly superb volume. It will, in thirty years' time, remain a - possibly the - classic treatment of power in the English language." -- Professor Colin Hay, University of Birmingham

"This wonderful extended version - effectively a new book - deepens and refines the conceptual, empirical and moral attributes of Power. No one concerned with politics can afford to miss this masterful clarification of power as capacity." -- Ira Katznelson, Ruggles Professor of Political Science and History, Columbia University

Power has three faces
By Humblebee
This is essential reading for those interested in the dynamics of power relations and, in particular, how power works to either enhance or undermine democratic participation in society. Over the course of the three essays that constitute the second edition of this book, Lukes develops an idea of power in three dimensions. In the first dimension, power is clearly visible in decision-making processes, where A exercises power over B when A's policy preferences, reflecting A's subjective interests, prevail over B's. Here, power is discernible only where a conflict of interests informs open debate over a public issue. This conflict gives rise to divergent policy preferences competing for public acceptance and political validation.

However, if one were to confine the study of power to its effects in the first dimension, that is, to the outcomes of decision-making processes, one misses other aspects of power detected in the biases of non-decision-making. Non-decision-making power is the power to keep certain issues off the table: it is the power to deny certain individuals or groups access to decision-making processes, and thus to prevent certain grievances from being translated into public issues. While decision-making power, as seen in the first dimension, may be widely distributed among various groups and individuals who alternately succeed in promoting their interests, there may be at the same time unity among these otherwise conflicting interests in preventing certain segments of the population from contributing to the discussion. The second dimension of power consists in this ability to control the agenda, to decide what gets decided--and what doesn't. Here, as in power's first dimension, power is again seen in a conflict situation, only the conflict is now covert, rendered invisible by non-decision-making power.

The third dimension of power incorporates and transcends power's first and second faces. Those who study three-dimensional power recognize not only power as it is exercised in the first and second dimensions but also power where it need not be so exercised. This occurs in the apparent absence of conflict, where power can be seen as the capacity to secure compliance to domination and thereby prevent conflicts or grievances from arising in the first place.

The third face of power is not directly visible, because the securing of willing compliance to domination does not require an explicit exercise of power. However, the mechanisms of such power (domination) are empirically accessible. They may involve the furthering of the material interests of the dominated within certain limits, as part of a class compromise, or they may involve the inculcation of ideologies that bring the dominated to accept the power structure of society as the "natural order of things" or as being divinely established. In both cases, which are not mutually exclusive, the "true interests" of the dominated are obscured; and the dominated are misled to act contrary to their real interests, chief among them being, one may argue, an interest in NOT being dominated and in having more freedom to live according to "the dictates of one's own nature and judgment."

Of course, as Lukes admits, "true interests" is a contested term. There doesn't seem to be a rigid set of objective interests with which everyone can readily identify. Rather than supplying a universal answer to the question of true interests, Lukes responds to this difficulty by providing a set of guidelines for identifying people's interests. The answer, Lukes argues, always depends on three things: the purpose of one's inquiry, one's theoretical framework, and the methods used.

Lukes also recognizes another difficulty in discussing the idea of true interests: It almost always leads to the notion of "false consciousness." False consciousness is a controversial idea, because it is often assumed to have condescending, elitist connotations. However, Lukes regards false consciousness as simply the result of being misled, many instances of which throughout history can be easily identified without much controversy. The mechanisms of false consciousness include censorship, disinformation, and "the promotion and sustenance of all kinds of failures of rationality and illusory thinking, among them the `naturalization' of what could be otherwise and the misrecognition of the sources of desire and belief" (p.149).

The third face of power, as developed by Lukes, expands the conceptual territory of power and reorients its study to include instances of power that escape the attention of those who conceive of power too narrowly, thereby limiting their observations to the realm of political participation. With this book, Lukes makes a vital contribution to the sociological study of power by revealing it as "capacity," and by showing how power works most effectively (and insidiously) when it is hidden.
