I agree w/ the reviewers who said take this w/ a grain of salt

There is some really good practical advice about being the best you that you can be and excellent advice about taking a break from dating for a time while you get your head cleared of any negative talk.

I don't think redheads need to dye their hair to attract a man. I don't think you need to have long hair to attract a man, especially if you don't good w/ long hair (I look awful w/ long hair. never have looked good w/ it. My hair looks best when it's a medium length) and I don't think you need to run around w/ an index card sized calling card w/ your photo and personal stats on it (although it might be useful if you're attending a lot of dating events). To me that just comes off a bit weird. but the suggestions to take time w/ your appearance even if you're just running out to the grocery store and for a few errands, did prove useful. (met 2 guys at the hardware store when I was buying some tools and later another time when I was in the gardening section. A lot of unattached single guys there on Friday nights. the hardware store might have to start charging a cover charge.)

I also did try some of the places she suggested meeting people and had some success and it inspired me to think outside of the box when thinking of where to meet people. (I used to play golf so I did go to the driving range and I met a few available guys there. It's a neighborhood range so I won't meet any millionaires there but then I'm not looking for one. I also became more active in my favorite charities and have met some men through there. I really have no interest in watching sports so I don't see the point in faking it--it sets up a false impression of who you are.) Try new things and do activities that interest you. When you're engaged in the activity, you become engaging.

The best advice in here was to know yourself and know what you want and to stay focused on what you want so you aren't distracted by your hormones and charmed by someone who isn't heading in the same direction you are and doesn't want what you want.

My recommendation is to read the book, take what you find to be useful, try a few of her suggestions that you think are a bit over the top just for the sake of doing it, and enter the entire process as if you're on a new adventure---like it's something exciting and new.

Apparently having curly hair and big lips are big turn offs for men.

Um, what about black women?

Oh, and apparently all women of color are "exotic." She lists all of the following women in the "exotic," not conventionally pretty category: Penelope Cruz, Iman, Halle Berry, Tyra Banks.

Exotic. Because apparently all normal, non exotic people are white and blond and speak English as their native language?

There are whole countries of people who look like Iman. In fact, there's a continent of them. They are not exotic. They are just not white. And Penelope Cruz? She is just a beautiful Spanish woman. Not exotic. Just Spanish.

So if you are a person of color, skip the whole section on looks. Because the woman just want you to hate yourself and to look like... well, anyone but your God-given self. She also wants you to think of yourself as exotic. Because we all want to date men who consider us exotic and not fully human and with our own histories and cultures that are completely unreal and not viable, right? RIGHT?

Best book on relationships I've ever read!!! And it works!!! Keeps u from running into the wrong guys and allows u to find the good onces!!! If ur looking for ur soul mate and marriage follow this book and u will be married.... It worked for me and my friend who married in a little over a year.I had been with my boyfriend for 5 years. I lived with him. I decided to move out (very hard to do by the way) and let him be my spare for a while. He quickly straighten out. I decided to give him the 90 days propose or otherwise I would delete him entirely. And guess what he proposed!!! He couldn't live without me!

Not as funny as I thought it would be, must have lost something in translation, still it had its moments, I'd just read Hotel Le Big Knob and that was very funny so I was a bit spoilt. I enjoyed it though and found it good to look at a real French Farce.

Dream Renewal

I was given "Fight For Your Dreams" as a reading assignment. I was thrilled at first because I have longed followed Les Brown. I was disappointed at first because I realized the book was not really a book by Les but one composed of stories by other motivators and speakers. I must say that I was greatly surprised because I decided to go ahead and read at lest the first story, then another and before I knew it I had read the entire book. Each of the story as the book cover states speak of racism, abusive, artists, entrepreneurs, speakers, etc. Yet as different as each story is the key point is that they all recognized their ability to overcome issues and turned their negatives into positive. Instead of Les telling you their story he has allowed them to tell their story so the book is like sitting down and getting to know new friends.

I like the fact that the background information on each is at the end of the story along with contact information if your wish to learn more about them. "The Power of Never Giving Up" is something that can be utilized in almost any setting. They are short stories that are great "ice breakers" if you are holding a meeting or ending on and need something to close out. I found a renewed interest in my own dream from reading each of the stories.

I would recommend this a good book to have if you are a speaker who wishes to motivate or mentor anyone. You can share one or more of the stories and expond on them to teach and allow someone to reach for their dreams. We often talk about role models yet most of the people in the story are people who had ordinary lives with ordinary role models who helped make a difference in their lives. The best role models are those that we have time to get to know. We can learn from the positive and negative things in our lives. These story allow us an opportunity to reflect on our own stories and see the dreams that we may have and how either we've lived our own dreams or those of others.

This turned out to be a good book after all for each story was needed. Some were more motivating than others but the diversity of the authors allowed for anyone reading to possible at least identify with one or more. I think that this would be a great classroom or small group assignment to allow discussion of the various stories and see the insight gained.

I highly recommend it and was deeply motivated to re-visit my own dreams.

This is a great book!! From the very first page, it inspires. Reading the various stories was life changing for me. The human spirit is incredible and Les Brown has brought that forward in each and every story. It is definitely worth reading!

About the Author
David Matsumoto received his B.A. from the University of Michigan in 1981 with High Honors in Psychology and Japanese. He subsequently earned his M.A. (1983) and Ph.D. (1986) in psychology from the University of California at Berkeley. He is currently Professor of Psychology and Director of the Culture and Emotion Research Laboratory at San Francisco State University, where he has been since 1989. He is also Director of Humintell, LLC, a company that provides research, consultation, and training on nonverbal behavioral analysis and cross-cultural adaptation. He has studied culture, emotion, social interaction and communication for over 30 years. His books include well-known titles such as Culture and Psychology, the Cambridge Dictionary of Psychology, and Cross-Cultural Research Methods in Psychology. He is the recipient of many awards and honors in the field of psychology, including being named a G. Stanley Hall lecturer by the American Psychological Association. He is the series editor for Cambridge University Press’ series on Culture and Psychology. He is also Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology.

Mark G. Frank is a professor and Director of the Communication Science Center at the University at Buffalo. He received his Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Cornell University in 1989, and afterward received a National Research Service Award from the National Institute of Mental Health to do postdoctoral research with Dr. Paul Ekman in the Psychiatry Department at the University of California at San Francisco Medical School. He had previously been on the faculty in the School of Psychology at the University of New South Wales in Australia, as well as the Communication Department at Rutgers University in New Jersey. He has published numerous research papers on facial expressions, emotion, and interpersonal deception, with much of the work funded by The National Science Foundation, Homeland Security, and the Department of Defense. He is also the co-developer of an automated computer system to read facial expressions. He has used these findings to lecture, consult with and train virtually all US Federal Law Enforcement/Intelligence Agencies, as well as local/state and select foreign agencies. He has also given workshops to US and foreign judges and magistrates. He has presented briefings to the National Academy of Sciences and the US Congress on Deception and Counter-terrorism. Finally, he has appeared in over 80 print, radio, and television appearances to talk about his work, including Time Magazine, New York Times, CBS Evening News, CNN, Fox News Channel, National Public Radio, The Learning Channel, the Discovery Channel, the Oprah Show, and so forth.

Hyi-Sung Hwang received her M.A. from San Francisco State University, and her Ph.D. from the Center for Psychological Studies of the Graduate School of Human Behavior, Berkeley, CA, 2009. She is a Research Scientist at Humintell, LLC, and Visiting Scholar at San Francisco State University. Her research interests are in emotion, nonverbal behaviors, and culture. She is an expert at the Facial Action Coding System and in the conduct of research examining facial expressions and other nonverbal behaviors. She is co-creator of many of the training tools used to teach law enforcement officers, national security personnel, and intelligence agents, as well as individuals in many other professions how to recognize micro and subtle facial expressions of emotion. She has also co-authored numerous scientific articles and book chapters on nonverbal behavior, facial expressions, and culture, and has made presentations of her research nationally and internationally.

great book

Bought this for my son as a gift. He just graduated with his psyc degree and is going into law enforcement. You know it's a great book when you child ask for text book as a gift after they've graduated and they carry it with them for weeks reading every detail in it. He said what he's read will help him greatly in law enforcement and it will be a good reference guide for years to come.

It is a must read if you are interested in behavioral sciences!

I just finished reading Dr. David Matsumoto's most recent book, Nonverbal Communication: Science and Applications.
This book is the book that has been missing from library shelves across the world!

The field of non-verbal communication is an ever evolving field. Numerous research projects are conducted every year and many authors continue to write books each year. However, it was time for someone like Dr. David Matsumoto to make clear and precise points on the subject.

Surrounded by two leading experts, Mark G. Frank & Hyi Sung Hwang, they were able to write a quality and informative text that has great simplicity and is easily understood. All three were able to create a much needed addition to microexpression training that has a sizable quantity of references.

From the first pages, I immediately felt that I was holding a great reference for non-verbal communication, carefully written by experts who know what they are talking about.

The first part of the book is written by the three previously mentioned authors, in collaboration with other professionals and colleagues and each chapter is documented, with clear and precise references, which makes it easy to follow up on studies and current research in the field.

The second part presents an implementation of the concepts discussed in the first part. The authors are professionals who explain how they use their knowledge of nonverbal communication on a daily basis. Although very interesting, I must admit that I enjoyed the first part more.

This book is a masterpiece written by three recognized experts in the science of non-verbal communication.

Joe Quirk serves as “Seavangelist” at the Seasteading Institute. He has taught at Lekha School of Creative Writing in San Jose and served as a freelance science humor consultant at Pixar. As a followup to his other popular science books, including the bestselling In Search of Schrodinger's Cat , astrophysicist Gribbin now collaborates with astronomer Rees for a New Age look at science's recent discoveries about the universe. Aided by charts, diagrams and M. C. Escher graphics, the authors range from the subatomic activity of what they call the "particle zoo" to quasars, black holes and superstring theory. Their favorite topic, though, is the perplexing question of dark matter: the gravity needed to form galaxies and keep them in motion requires a mass 10 times greater than that which can be observed. Although most of the book is able, straightforward science writing, the mystery of the missing mass is a keystone leading to the proposition that our carbon-based life was not haphazardly arrived at, but the deliberate end of a universe "tailor made for man." Yet the writers' sense of perspective (admitting that this may be a "parochial" view of cosmic events) and clearly reasoned argument render their volume a knowledgeable introduction for believers and skeptics alike.

About the Author
Dr. John Gribbin, science writer and cosmologist, is the author of many nonfiction books, including In Search of the Big Bang, In Search of the Double Helix, the best-selling In Search of Schr�dinger's Cat, and The Omega Point, which was nominated for Britain's top science book award in 1988. His first solo science fiction novel, Father to the Man, has recently been published in the U.S. A frequent guest on science programs on BBC Radio, Gribbin holds a doctorate in astrophysics from Cambridge University and lives in East Sussex, England. While still a graduate student, Dr. Martin Rees predicted that structures inside quasars (then newly discovered) would appear to move much faster than light. This was confirmed several years later, and he has continued to be on the forefront in the study of cosmology, galaxies, black holes, and space science. Elected Plumian Professor of Astronomy and Experimental Philosophy at Cambridge when he was only 30, Rees continues to be interested in the broader philosophical implications of his research and in conveying the fascination of the latest scientific ideas to a wide public. He has written numerous general articles, appeared frequently on radio and television, and given many public lectures, especially in the United States. Simply Excellent

This is possibly the best book I have read about Cosmology. This is my fourth Gribbin book, the other three being of his "Insearch of ..." series. And I definitely found this to be his best. First of all the book deals with an area which is somewhat different from most other books on Cosmology. The author's argument about why dark matter is necessary to make the universe closed, and how it relates to the requirements of existence certain particles to complete the particle physics equations is superb. The book gives a plethora of information about what could possibly constitute the dark matter of the universe. It talks about particles with bizarre characteristics like quark nuggets, axions etc. The book also includes a lot of speculations like existence of "shadow matter" which appears too bizarre to be real. And last but not the least, the book tackles the sensitive issue of "Anthropic Cosmology" which stresses on the fact that the universe is taylor-made for man. This is really intriguing.

I enjoyed the book

I bought this book, copyright 2015, hoping it would be a current assessment of modern cosmology. There are many passages referencing being written in 1988 or so. Not being a professional cosmologist, I cannot tell if the text is updated for current thinking. I enjoyed the book, but I think there are technically richer ones, like Chaisson's Epic of Evolution.

Obsolete!!

Mr. Gribbin and Mr. Rees have written a clear account of the state of cosmology--in 1989

Amazon seems to be recycling chapters from older books as new works by the same author and, in this case, implying that a book written in 1989 is up-to-date. It isn't.

Full disclosure: I'm the author of THE MYSTERIOUS UNIVERSE (2008), a book that about black holes, dark energy, and supernovae, and I know something about this topic.

For example, I found no mention of dark energy--a concept that's critical to an understanding of modern cosmology.

Here’s another example: Stephen Hawking once speculated that perhaps the arrow of time would reverse and run backwards if the universe began to contract, culminating in a “Big Crunch.” But Hawking famously retracted this opinion in 1990. This retraction isn’t even mentioned in the book–just the original speculation--additional evidence that the book hasn’t been revised.

If you've paid good money for this book hoping to get an up-to-date account of the state of cosmology in 2016, you've been snookered.

Amazon's for this book says it was written in 2015. This is false advertising. Amazon needs to come clean with customers about when a book was originally published and that information should be displayed prominently.
