About the Author
Brooke Willett has been writing since she could hold a chubby crayon. She got her start, singing into an upside down plastic hair brush, wearing a yellow dress and oversized sun glasses, to an audience of American dolls, My Little Pony, and a Raggedy Ann. She got her first big break when she realized she did not understand the world, so she set out in search for answers. She's got railroad in her blood. Both Brooke's biological father and maternal grandfather were lifelong conductors.

A must read for the survival/disaster genre

Book Review: How to be a Hobo, by Brooke Willet 5 out of 5 stars
My father once told me: “Don’t be so hard on the homeless and hobo’s because you can easily be in their position; don’t change or take a shower for a week and you’ll be just like they are.” How to be a Hobo by Brooke Willett is a necessary book in the Disaster Response/Survival genre. Ms. Willett wrote this book after having a crisis in her life, her response was to give up everything and go on the road with her beloved dog Cloud.
Over the year or so she was in this situation, she wrote about how to get by on the streets and in many ways thrive. She briefly discusses most aspects of how to survive from dumpster diving, to where to sleep safely. The realization for the reader is that you truly don’t need much. She ends the book with how to get off the streets. This book does not romanticize this lifestyle, but successfully gives a first person point of view of people in this situation.
I think a lot of folks have gone through a rough period in their life when we realize things aren’t as we were told. Most of us will never do something as extreme as Brooke, but it was her way of dealing with it. One paragraph I believe sums up what she learned from being on the road perfectly:
“Life is a journey. Don’t forget to stop and enjoy it once in a while, don’t get so caught up in life’s pleasures that you destroy what is truly important here. What is truly important? Creating the life you want to live. A life of fulfillment, happiness and purpose. Be your own author.”

A Pocket Guide for Alternative Lifestyles

Full of anecdotes and practical information for those that find themselves, voluntarily or not, living the hobo life. Written in first person, Brooke and her pup Cloud had spent several years traveling alone and with a pack of like minded travelers, by rail, thumb and bus. The pictures are gritty and real, this may well be the next cult classic. Move over Jack Kerouac. I look forward to more from this young writer.

easy go" attitude toward basics like blankets

This is a thought-provoking description from the inside of a sub-culture most of us would avoid joining at all costs. What surprised me most was the "easy come, easy go" attitude toward basics like blankets, clothing, and other necessities. Although the author begs us repeatedly to help out "dirty kids," I am less likely to hand out blankets, knowing they will probably end up rotting in a forest somewhere. Still, I am grateful to this book for inside information about the homeless problem. I hope that it persuades some young person experiencing hard times that abandoning possessions and hitting the road is not the answer. While I think most Americans, including myself, own way too much stuff, this book has convinced me that I really wouldn't want to own just the contents of a backpack and the clothes on my back.
