The Java Sea Campaign is the story of the Japanese conquest of the Netherlands East Indies. Strictly speaking, the history of the United States Navy's participation in that campaign should begin with the arrival of our Asiatic Fleet in the Indies and the beginning of our active cooperation with the British and Dutch. It is difficult, however, to set a definite date for such a beginning. Several of our ships were sent into the East Indies in the latter part of November 1941, and various units of our fleet followed at intervals all through December. Moreover, the conquest of the Indies by the Japanese was merely the culmination of a single, carefully planned campaign which opened with their attack on the Philippines and Malaya. Their advance into the Dutch possessions was carefully coordinated with and dependent upon their successes in these other theatres. While our defense of the Philippines is the subject of a separate narrative (in preparation), some reference must be made to events there to explain the situation at the opening of the Java Sea Campaign. ORGANIZATION AND DISPOSITION OF OUR FLEET The United States Asiatic Fleet was something less than its title suggested...........

Book Covers the amazing story of the Cruiser Marblehead: The Ship That Refused To Die!

This historical account was written vey soon after the battles in or near the Java Sea. My father was on the Marblehead and never told me how bad the situation was until I read the account of that amazing ship and her crew. My father was one of the men who constantly was trying to restore electric power to the ship. What I didn't know was the extensive damage the ship suffered and the "explosive sparks" that plagued the ship after the bombing attack. With 20 tons of seawater in her hull, no rudder, and just the determination of her crew to stay afloat, the Marblehead brought her crew home safely, including my dad. She got a hero;s welcome when she entered port in New York after navigating 16,000 miles around the globe using ust a compass and a sextant. That crew were true heroes and my dad never told me. Typical of that WWII generation. Among story of naval battles not covered in modern history texts. Many thanks to the the US Navy Historical records for releasing this book in Kindle Format. If you have a parent or grandparent who served in the Navy during WW2, this is as good as it gets.

The book is written as a series of after action reports by participants in the Asiatic Fleet's obsolete ships against the Japanese Navy in the first half of 1942. Without air cover, the Asiatic Fleet was at the mercy of Japanese aircraft and from the heavy guns of more modern Japanese heavy cruisers. While not a thick book, the writing is often thrilling as many accounts are written by survivors of ships sunk in the Java Sea Campaign. Brave ships and braver men fought against tremendous odds.
